"You're too young for joint replacement" — that's advice that often causes more harm than good.

Age is not the deciding factor. Joint damage, pain severity, and quality of life are what matter. Younger patients with severe arthritis, sports injuries, or genetic conditions may need surgery in their 40s or 50s — and modern implants are designed to last 20-25+ years.

Delaying surgery because of age can lead to muscle wasting, altered gait, and worse outcomes when surgery finally happens. The right time for surgery is when pain limits your life, not when you reach a certain age.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that rest means staying in bed after joint replacement surgery.

The truth? Movement begins within 24 hours — because early mobility prevents complications, reduces stiffness, and speeds up recovery.

Staying in bed too long increases risks: blood clots, muscle loss, joint stiffness, and slower healing. Modern surgery is designed to get you moving quickly and safely.

Your new joint needs motion to heal properly. Physiotherapy isn't optional — it's essential. Movement after surgery isn't about being tough. It's about getting better.

Recovery after joint replacement doesn't happen in bed — it happens through movement.

These 5 simple exercises are designed to restore strength, improve range of motion, and prevent stiffness. Most patients start within 24 hours of surgery under physiotherapy guidance.

Movement isn't just recommended — it's essential for faster healing and better long-term outcomes. Always follow your surgeon's and physiotherapist's instructions, as every patient's recovery plan is personalized.

Which exercise would you find most challenging? Let me know

Had a wonderful experience sharing insights on the Direct Anterior Approach (DAA) at AIIMS Delhi today. I had the privilege of delivering multiple talks, including a keynote address on “DAA: Adaptation & My Personal Reflections.”

It was truly energising to interact with orthopaedic enthusiasts from across India. The growing demand for training in high-tech robotic and minimally invasive DAA among surgeons nationwide was clearly evident.

A big thank you to the esteemed global faculty—Dr Cory Calendine, Dr Mizan Marican , Ilan Freedman, Lee Rubin, Jochen G. Hofstaetter, and Frans-Jozef Vandeputte—for making the sessions lively, insightful, and highly interactive.

Special thanks to Vikrant Manhas and Prof. Vijayakumar, the organisers, for putting together such a fantastic academic event.
