Although PAD is mostly considered a lifestyle disease that can be controlled with the help of appropriate diet and exercise, there are several factors that are known to indicate occurrence. Persons above the age of 55 with obesity, who smoke on a regular basis, and have associated conditions like diabetes and heart disease are at risk of developing PAD. In severe cases, PAD can endanger the limb or even life.

The blockage of arteries by fat and cholesterol deposits in Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD), can cause damage to the nerves in the long run. This is especially evident in the lower limbs, where patients feel consistent pain and numbness in parts of or the entire foot. The numbness and lack of sensation poses threat to the patient, as minor injuries can often go unnoticed and develop into non-healing ulcers, requiring limb amputation.

Peripheral Arterial Disease is caused by deposits of fat and cholesterol in the arteries causing improper circulation of blood. This leads to compromise in supply of nutrients and oxygen to different parts of the body, leading to adverse conditions.

In severe cases, the high build-up of plaque in the lower limbs causes constant pain in the legs (severe claudication pain), and the low supply of oxygen causes ulcers in the legs. Claudication pain is a common condition in people with Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD). It shows as cramp like in the calf muscles at short spans of low to moderate walking, and usually subsides with rest. Affected people usually stop several times while walking due to pain, which gets relieved after stopping only to start again after walking a certain distance. Caused due to fatty deposits in the arteries, called plaque, the blockage leads to low supply of oxygen to the muscles in the legs, and, in turn, severe pain.
