Hair shedding and hair loss are not the same.
At Cutis Hospital, we often see people panic over daily hair fall without understanding whether it is normal shedding or true hair loss. Knowing the difference helps reduce unnecessary stress and ensures timely medical care.
Every scalp has around one lakh hair follicles. As part of the normal hair cycle, about 60 to 100 hairs fall daily. This is called hair shedding. It is temporary, normal, and usually followed by new hair growth from the same follicle.
Hair loss, however, is different. Sudden, excessive, or rapid hair fall, visible thinning, widening of the scalp part, or bald patches may indicate an underlying issue such as severe stress, illness, hormonal imbalance, or medical treatments like chemotherapy. These situations require professional evaluation.
Shedding is normal and reversible.
Hair loss needs medical attention.
Understanding this difference helps you observe your hair correctly and seek the right treatment at the right time.
