Honoured to have delivered an invited lecture on Paragangliomas in the Mahadevaiah Skull Base Session and to have participated as a panelist in the Session on Skull Base Osteomyelitis in the recently concluded AOICON 2026 at Kolkata. It was a delight, as usual, to be able to get to interact with colleagues, friends and peers from across the country. AOICON was at its best in Kolkata and kudos to Kaushal Sheth, Dwaipayan Mukher and team for pulling off a spectacular show! Icing on the cake was our PG Dr Mona Yadav winning the Gold Medal at the PG paper presentation competition for her presentation on Subtotal Petrosectomies. Our PG Dr Azhar also won the second place in the same competition for his presentation on Endoscopic Stapedotomy

36 Hours That Changed a Life: Where Precision Redefined His Second Innings | Manipal Hospital

Hamza Babikar from the UAE came to Manipal Hospital with a large and complex tumor involving the skull base, nasal cavity, septum, and surrounding sinuses conditions often considered difficult or inoperable.
Under the care of Dr. Sampath Chandra Prasad Rao, the tumor was successfully removed using an advanced endoscopic skull base approach, guided by surgical navigation without any facial incision. The surgery was completed safely, with no postoperative complications, and the patient recovered well, returning to normal daily activities.
Manipal Hospital Old Airport Road Bangalore is among the leading private centers in India for skull base surgery, managing both anterior and lateral skull base pathologies and receiving complex referrals from across India and abroad. This case reflects the hospital’s strong expertise, technology-driven care, and patient-focused outcomes.

Master Joseph was brought to Manipal Hospital Old Airport Road with significant difficulty in breathing and persistent mouth breathing. On evaluation, Dr. Sampath Chandra found enlarged tonsils and adenoids— a common condition in early childhood that can affect breathing, sleep, and concentration if left untreated. X-ray findings confirmed adenoid hypertrophy along with tonsillar enlargement.

The child underwent a coblation adenotonsillectomy, a modern and minimally invasive procedure. Relief was immediate, and Master Joseph recovered completely. Post-surgery, he is breathing comfortably, concentrating better in school, and enjoying an improved quality of life. Dr. Sampath Chandra advises parents to consult an ENT specialist if children experience recurrent throat infections, mouth breathing, or breathing difficulty. At Manipal Hospital Old Airport Road, comprehensive ENT care is provided with advanced techniques and a dedicated expert team.

World Skull Base

It is not about the idea. It is about making the idea happen.

Echoing this maxim, the genesis of World Skull Base Fellowship Diplomas was laid. What began as an idea, gathered strength by the tremendous interest that it generated in the medical fraternity. The event has grown beyond expectations bringing together specialists from various countries to the first ever course. I would like to express my sheer excitement and enthusiasm that the World Skull Base family is growing and we are all going to gather soon, in the beautiful city of Bangalore.

Skull Base Surgery involves skills in Neurosurgery, Otology, Head & Neck Surgery, Facial Plastics, Hearing and other neural rehabilitation. Gaining expertise in all these areas is an arduous task for a specialist focused in any one of these areas. Hence, for long, Skull Base Surgery has not been practiced in its entirety and it is also the reason why it lacks a structured training programme in most countries. It is this that we hope to address with these Fellowship Diplomas: to provide a structured curriculum based training programmed in both Lateral and Anterior skull base surgery.

The World Skull Base Fellowship Diplomas will be held in Lateral and Anterior Skull Base Surgery every alternating year. The modulated format has been developed to incorporate all topics in the subspecialty along with cadaveric hands on dissections. The Lateral Skull Base Fellowship Diploma includes 90 topics, 72 hours of dissections, 60 hours of lectures & 12 hours of video sessions. The Diploma has received an overwhelming response and is showing signs of a long journey.
