Happy to share that Dr Sampath Chandra Prasad Rao and team were felicitated by Dr Manish Rai, Zonal Director of Manipal Hospitals and Dr Nayana Pai, Director of Manipal Hospitals, Old Airport Road, at the Town Hall meet at MHB Academy yesterday.
A remarkable clinical achievement was made at Manipal Hospitals, Old Airport Road wherein the Skull Base Surgery Team, led by Dr. Sampath Chandra Prasad Rao, along with Dr Sathwik Shetty, Dr Srikanth V, Dr Mayur Shetty and Dr HS Murthy successfully completed a 36-hour marathon surgery on a 48 year old patient with a massive Skull Base tumour (Spheno-petro-clival-jugular meningioma) that was previously considered inoperable by leading tertiary care centres in India.
In a single sitting, the team accomplished:
▪️ Complex Skull Base tumour resection
▪️ Hearing rehabilitation with Osia implantation
▪️ Facial & Cranial nerve reanimation using Cross Facial anastomosis and tarsorrhaphy
▪️Transtemporal-transpetrous-translabyrinthine-Infratemporal fossa-approach
▪️ Multidisciplinary approach involving Skull Base Surgery, Neurosurgery and Plastic Surgery Teams
This is one of the first surgeries of its kind, showcasing the true multidisciplinary strength of our Skull Base, Neurosurgery & Plastic Surgery teams.
Patient has been discharged in a stable neurological condition. Also the new portfolio of OSI300 implant was performed for the first time in Karnataka as well.
A proud moment for us — reinforcing our capability to manage the most challenging skull base cases with world-class outcomes.

Captain Swamy, a retired government servant, approached Dr. Sampath Chandra with persistent nasal blockage and headaches, initially diagnosed as multiple nasal polyps. While nasal polyps are often benign and manageable, detailed evaluation and imaging revealed a more serious condition known as Inverted Papilloma—a rare, pre-malignant tumor with the potential to turn malignant if left untreated.
Further investigations showed extensive involvement of the skull base, nasal septum, sphenoid sinus, and surrounding nasal structures. Dr. Sampath Chandra successfully performed a complete tumor clearance using an advanced endoscopic endonasal skull base technique, ensuring total removal through a minimally invasive, scar-less approach.
The patient recovered well post-surgery and is currently on regular follow-up, symptom-free, and leading a comfortable life. This case underscores the importance of expert diagnosis, timely intervention, and advanced ENT surgical care at Manipal Hospital Old Airport Road.

Shashi Kala Kabra’s health journey began with a constant whistle-like sound in her ear, which later progressed to dizziness, bleeding, and complete hearing loss. After multiple scans, she was diagnosed with a paraganglioma, a rare skull base tumor, and was referred to Dr. Sampath Chandra Rao.
Using a combination of pre-operative embolization and a specially modified surgical approach, Dr. Rao and his team successfully removed the tumor while preserving vital nerve functions. Her recovery was smooth and complication-free, and she is now returning to Jaipur in good health.

It is not about the idea. It is about making the idea happen.
Echoing this maxim, the genesis of World Skull Base Fellowship Diplomas was laid. What began as an idea, gathered strength by the tremendous interest that it generated in the medical fraternity. The event has grown beyond expectations bringing together specialists from various countries to the first ever course. I would like to express my sheer excitement and enthusiasm that the World Skull Base family is growing and we are all going to gather soon, in the beautiful city of Bangalore.
Skull Base Surgery involves skills in Neurosurgery, Otology, Head & Neck Surgery, Facial Plastics, Hearing and other neural rehabilitation. Gaining expertise in all these areas is an arduous task for a specialist focused in any one of these areas. Hence, for long, Skull Base Surgery has not been practiced in its entirety and it is also the reason why it lacks a structured training programme in most countries. It is this that we hope to address with these Fellowship Diplomas: to provide a structured curriculum based training programmed in both Lateral and Anterior skull base surgery.
The World Skull Base Fellowship Diplomas will be held in Lateral and Anterior Skull Base Surgery every alternating year. The modulated format has been developed to incorporate all topics in the subspecialty along with cadaveric hands on dissections. The Lateral Skull Base Fellowship Diploma includes 90 topics, 72 hours of dissections, 60 hours of lectures & 12 hours of video sessions. The Diploma has received an overwhelming response and is showing signs of a long journey.
I look forward to welcome you all and I ascertain that you will enjoy as as much we have enjoyed bringing this together for you!
