In my son's shloka class, each parent takes a turn and cooks the Prasad to all the kids and the parents. When it was my turn to cook and distribute, an elderly woman walked to me and collected the Prasad. After 2 min she came back and questioned "are you a Brahmin??they normally use this recipe for the Sundal". I nodded my head in all directions saying a yes and a no.. Yes, because many think being born in a Brahmin family makes one a Brahmin(which is the case now) and No, because, I know that I am not a Brahmin yet. Have not read Vedas, forget about understanding them and have not attained Brahma gnana.

After that, one of the kids who was standing nearby and listening to the conversation asked me why I nodded my head like that. To which I smiled and said you will get to know in the next class. In the following class, kids aged 8-10 were about to learn as to who is called a Hindu. In the class when they were asked if a doctor's son will become a doctor by birth , will a lecturer's son a lecturer by birth..they all laughed and said. One has to have the necessary qualification to become a doctor or a lecturer. They have to study in the particular branch and earn a degree.. by the end of the class everyone agreed that one becomes hindu by not hurting others, not lying and by not indulging in any wrong doings.

And the curious child from the previous week came to me and asked are you getting qualified to be a Brahmin?? I said, yes….

That day I realized that a child could understand that there is a process, a tapas that one has to undergo to become something. But I was still not giving by best to become a true Iyengar yoga teacher.Just by adding the name Iyengar yoga in their visiting cards or the boards, one cannot become an iyengar teacher. One has to understand the nuances of why each instruction is given? How it impacts the physical and physiological body? It is the hard work of Guru ji, he has laid a path to gain the Brahma gnana and not just become a Brahmin but to go beyond that. Iyengar yoga is a treasure trove, everyone has something to gain from it. It is up to you what you want, what you aim for.

Yoga is desha-kaala-ateeta. A foreigner might become a Brahman in true sense and a Brahmin from birth might be a foreigner to yoga !

She had lost her lower leg (below knee) in an accident at the age of 11, the average age of 5th class children. While other children were playing, running, jumping, Nagaveni was having 2 surgeries on her half leg !

God’s grace to have given her a loving family, she continues her education. She could get a job as a postal assistant. She learnt to ride a scooter and started commuting to her office. Everything was going good until she had her second road accident in which she injured her shoulders and head. She had to go through a major surgery. She had lost her memory. With compassionate nurses and her own family's support she could slowly regain her health and memory. Post office stood with her by offering long leave and assistance after resuming her work. These incidents made a deep impact on her, she restricted herself to eat very less food and drink hardly any water, afraid of falling again if she goes to the toilet ! Yes, in many offices in India there is no awareness to build handicapped accessible toilets. Her lifestyle damaged her health more. She started finding it difficult to walk with her artificial limb also. Doctors suggested her to reduce weight. The only hope was yoga. But, there were no yoga teachers who dared to teach asanas to her with such a medical history.

I was happy to see Nagaveni practicing many asnans independently in yesterday’s live session, sharing her experience by stressing the importance of yoga practise. She herself a best message to society.

Since I moved to Singapore, a year and half ago I never got a chance to practice with her. By the way, I am Pallavi, I like to introduce myself as a student of Aanandam yogashala though Arathi always introduce me as assistant teacher at Aanandam. After watching Nagaveni, I felt it is worth sharing her journey to you all, being a live wittness.

By chance, she got to know about Arathi by her colleague who happens to be Arathi's sister. After discussing over the phone with Nagaveni, Arathi and I decided to go to the Post office to meet her. (though I was a new student at Aanandam, I was fortunate enough that I got a chance to be with Arathi and assist her in teaching). She looked at us with her usual broad shy smile and spoke about her health condition and the need for her to practice Yoga. Arathi agreed to teach thrice a week at their office premises for a month. But now, Nagaveni needed to seek permission from the post-master. She was so reluctant to go alone. We accompanied her, so she could ask for his permission to practice yoga after their working hours. He was kind enough to agree to it, but, the place for practise was only the first floor corridor. Nagaveni had no option than climbing to there, she used to take time climb each and every step. Because of Nagaveni, we got opportunity to teach many women who were working at the post office.

On the first day at the PO, Arathi asked her to remove the prosthetic leg for the practice. She was very hesitant, though she was with only the known people. Arathi strictly told that she can teach only if she removes the leg, Nagaveni had no choice than agreeing to her ! The first asana taught was Trikonasana. We used chair to support her. We both managed to teach the group also giving special attention to Nagaveni and other lady who had a health issue.

You have seen in the video her doing a lengthy Adhomukha Shvanasana hopping back with her one leg adjusting herself according to Arathi's instructions. I can never forget how she learnt Adhomukha Shvanasana. Only those who have done the asana trying to touch the heel, will know what is the stretch and imagine with one leg doing it. Lifting knee off the ground and placing it slowly down requires a lot of effort. This ensured us that she built enough strength in her hands and shoulders for inversions. We taught front bends, sarvangasana and a chair backbend to Nagaveni with others.

But, Teaching an amputee to practice Shirsasana was new to us as well. In order to make her understand Arathi and I have practiced the asana with one leg tied.

One day, We asked all other students to do headstand against wall. As usual lifting everyone’s leg up to headstand is a big workout for a teacher..haha. Nagaveni got motivated to see everyone doing and came forward asking her to teach the same. The moment we were waiting for ! We used belt so that elbows don’t spread out. We both somehow managed to lift her up to the pose. This moment was unforgettable to everyone who witnessed there.

In 1 month's time she had noticed the changes, the practice of asana had brought in her and wished to learn regularly. Nagaveni contacted Arathi again after a couple of months and said she would like to attend the classes at Aanandam on sundays. She would climb 2 storeys to reach the class and without any hesitation she removed her prosthetic leg in front of total strangers and hopped all the way to the mat, We noticed the courage in her to face people. She practiced with everyone. She did all the asanas like any other student, many times with the help of props like chair, bricks and rope and stayed longer in asanans than other students, at times. With Guidance, Over time, She could alone climb to rope shirshasana (we could design this with a cotton saree for her, as aanandam was new to spend money to buy anything!)

Attending the classes only during sundays and public holidays, by the end of six months she could do shirsasana without the wall, with Arathi's support. Nagaveni was so happy on the day when she did shirsasana in the centre. She beamed like a winner.

With regular practice she became more confident to insist and get granted a handicapped accessible friendly toilet to be built in her post office. This revolutionary step was taken by her for other such people to not to suffer like her, the basic right. That was her winning moment in true sense. I am proud to see her happy and strong.

If there was no Guruji in the history of yoga, there would be no chances of people like Nagaveni or any person with any physical restriction or people who are not physically fit due to their ill health, learn yoga for their betterment, to surpass the limitation of the body to reach the highest. Even today, people have prejudices on Iyengar yoga as physical yoga. Can anyone with any kind of suffering, sit in meditation to bring peacefulness in the mind ? The mind which can not be perceived by any sensory organ but solely depends on sensory organs. That means bodily pain perceived by sensory organs makes an effective imprint in mind too. Become bodily strong to build willpower, courage and awareness to get suitable mind status for pranayama & meditation. The speciality of Iyengar Yoga is that the practise style of asanas are discovered by Guruji is a complete package of all 8 limbs of Pathanjali's Ashtanga Yoga ! The proof is he himself (please watch Rajiv Mehrotra interviewing Guruji along with Honorable Dalai Lama on Youtube), who has reached the highest state in Yoga setting an example to householders like us.

After listening to a 69 minutes of commentary on 2nd chapter 5th sutra, anybody may get questions,- Is the body that dirty to live with ? Alas, the aatman lives in dirt, what a pity ?!

She smilingly told,-
"Body is not dirt, buddhi is dirty and the same is coming out of those people's mouth, who think the dirt is below the trunk..haha! You focus on what you are doing. Read only Swami Vivekananda's commentary or ask a person who has seen light for the right explanation of shlokas. Impurity is in the thought for taking the body as me instead of realizing aatman as the reality. That avidya is impure or that impurity is avidya, not the body. Once you see the pure, everything looks pure to you. There is no dirt except such thoughts and minds. Until you see light, you are in darkness and you see everything as dark.

Praveen, you should never preach until you see or realize the truth (In fact, It is not necessary to preach even after seeing). Don't spit dirt of ignorance and confuse the world. Don't try to explain any verse, because you can't understand it at all. Practise with Bhakthi to see HIM, that is all.
Everything has been explained and well written here on the page. Let's not waste our time. We will only help people who come to us as instructed by my teacher Faeq Biria..okay?"

And, I completely agree with my teacher Arathi KN. I follow her. Here is the link of Swami Vivekananda's Commentary on Patanjali YogaSutras, for you:

Yogaschittavruttinirodhah ||PYS 2.1||

'Chitta', the core of yoga to be understood clearly, to restrain the vruttis. This is very simple but, we modern people always want logic to suffice our limited knowledge. What is that, I repeatedly refer to as limited knowledge ? For instance, school going children have knowledge. Teenagers think they know everything. College students know that they know everything in the world because they have the power of Google. Few years later, you start doubting Google is a bundle of information, and you don't get everything you want to know. Why, How, When & For what reason this virus has come and What is the medicine for a simple very tiny virus ? Our knowledge is limited. Therefore, only we understand that many decades of medical science research are limited. Not only science but in all the fields of what we are into, our knowledge is limited. It is also true with individuals. Each individual's size of their information bundle varies. Hence, we have to agree that with our limited knowledge we can't deny or discard the shastras which have been surviving since ageless times. Now, the theorem is proved, therefore we conclude that we need to believe in scriptures only.

My most time is going in convincing you guys to believe in scriptures, otherwise, it is easy to understand everything.

Chitta is the total sum of samskaras from many past lives. We can not attend chitta directly, therefore, we need to attend kleshas. Kleshas are the results of samskaras and the results of kleshas build more samskaras for future. Kleshas are easily understandable as it is happening in the present life. Example, you may dislike someone for no reason (you may also find some reasons for saying sake) you may like some people as soon as you see them. You may want to hate some, love some people. You may be afraid of a person or adore a person. All these are kleshas. Your samskara from past many lives make you hate or love, adore or ignore, loyal or disloyal ! (This is difficult to agree for modern brainz) But, the results of kleshas build samskara for next life, which we need to restrict. This is what is in our hands now, at present.

'Where are the Kleshas, I will set them fire to' you may say so. These can't be seen, results can be experienced. In texts, it is written that the seat of tamas (kleshas) is mooladhara chakra. We, in Iyengar Yoga, don't use this word 'chakra' because it is the most misinterpreted word along with the word kriyayoga. This gives the imagination of 'chakra uddeepane', which is not our marga. We are into society, we need to do all our duties. We reach the goal in satvik marga. Hence we don't try anything with chakra. There is a popular story, one yogi had a siddhi of walking on water, which he aquiers with his lifetime practise. Ramakrishna Paramshamsa with a big laughter tells, 'nakaNe kotre teppadonu karkondu hogtaane' (with just a quarter rupee a sailor takes you that side)

We will come back to our subject of kleshas and samskaras.
You do a asana and stretch everywhere. You will notice under stretch, overstretch, pain, stretch in the skin, muscle, blood flow etc, but it is difficult to perceive lower of the lower abdomen, which is tamas. There the kleshas hidden and difficult to perceive. Now, Iyengar's instructions come to your rescue ! Those instructions are the real pelvis (eye!) openers. Only with that kind of asana practise you address kleshas. Now, your chitta is clearing. But, you only understand that the mind is light and your responses & reactions to people & situations are better. With Practise over time, you get clarity about kleshas and you have changed the results of them, which builds good samskara and destroys bad ones. This will lead you further. When a yogi comes to the highest level of asana practise, where kumbhaka happens, chitta vrutti nirodha happens for that amount of time. Hence he needs to practise the same throughout his lifetime to be in that state as long as possible. This clears chitta for the next life or he may attain kaivalya with God's grace in that life.

This is the right practise of yoga. Unless we attend kleshas and understand the results to restrain them, it is dangerous to go further, in a hurry to reach the final state. It will destroy the practitioner if forcefully practised anything. Have purity, clarity from within oneself. Focus to build qualities of a yogi. Learn to recognize ego and ways of thinning it. Become god to see the God.

This can only be done if you practise Iyengar Yoga, in this era of modernization and confusions. Other styles of practitioners interested in dropping back (to urdhva dhanurasana), not lifting up !

(My teacher Arathi KN explains this, when I could not understand how turning out feet in prasarita podottasana opens the pelvis. Logically, backbends open pelvis. She says, all the asanas will do the same if you practise with appropriate Iyengar Yoga instructions. Opening pelvis is not opening it out, it opens for you to understand your own kleshas. Therefore, it can be opened in front bends like Pashchimottanasana ! I hope, I learn them as they are, to understand kleshas)

My teacher asked me to explain Heaven (Swarga), Hell (Naraka) and Trishanku Swarga (Trishanku's Heaven), after watching my YouTube Live classes !!

I was a bit agitated. She wants to measure my understanding and as usual my knowledge is limited and I can think within that. Hence, I couldn't even clearly understand her explanation. But, she says that anything will only be understood at the right time. And some other times, she says that there is no time and space ! With all my confusions, I want to give you her explanation as it is. Some of you may be profound enough to understand the real knowledge given by my teacher. You need to read previous posts of the shloka explanation and Bhagavadgeethe. Then only you can understand this 'a bit'..!

Heaven; Hell; Trishanku's Heaven;
All three are the status of our journey from birth to realizing Brahman. Drutarashtra is the Shudra who is blind to the Vedas. Some deny Vedas thinking modernisation, some are involved in the circle of birth to death without giving it a thought. They are Ajnani, the blinds. This state is Hell.

Sanjaya is a state of dwija who understands this vicious circle and believes in Vedas. He does good karmas to attenuate bad samskaras to reach high in next life. He has some ideas of heaven & hell.

Arjuna who sees his inner Guru Krishna, guided by him, will work for Krishna. We may say, He himself is the Krishna working in the form of Arjuna, is the ultimate state to be attained, is the purpose of Yoga. In fact, the purpose of the very birth. This state is Heaven. Because, he is untouched by anything in the world, pain or pleasure, raga or dwesha, sukha or dukha, no attachments or detachments to his own thoughts or mind that occur in him like us. He is the witness of all, yet doing his role.

Then what is the 5th state which is not mentioned in Shloka ?
Trishanku's Heaven. This is also a state in the same journey. Who are into adhyayana, will know a phrase, 'one who has not taken birth from yoni (va**na)' ಯೋನಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟದವನು.

What you mean by that phrase ? I know most people deny the 'fact' because they can't understand it. That is why it is told that 'aastika' is one who believes scriptures. You may not understand but believe in scriptures, because they are records of God's words.

Now, will come back to our subject.
After seeing light, vipra should continue his sadhane till his last breath. How intense his sadhane, importantly after seeing light, that better it fructifies in his next & last life. He is the one who doesn't take birth from yoni in the last life. But, how he gets liberation in that life depends on his previous life's sadhane, according to which the human is assigned ! If the sadhane of vipra is greatest, he will guide himself and the human in the last life. He finishes off his work and gets liberated. Otherwise, vipra is locked inside the human who can't recognize the inner guru. That human, even with the external guru, fails again & again to recognize the necessity of the liberation of the inner guru. Now, that vipra, couldn't get liberated nor dies at his wish. Nothing remains in his hands though he has seen light in his previous life. This status is called Trishanku's Swarga.
To make it understandable, I give you an example which is not appropriate. Wouldn't Arjuna recognize his inner voice Krishna and run away from Warfield or fail to understand his duties, then the inner Guru Krishna is locked inside the human Arjuna, is Trishanku's heaven. He is free but not free. To get a human like Arjuna one should become Krishna !

Read Gist of today's Live Class (Link is given below):

It is true that, with self enquiry 'naanyar' you will attain the eternal truth as said by Ramana Maharshi. But, that question arose in him when he experienced 'near death'- Who was the one dying and who experienced that ?

Did you ever get that question in any point of time. Even when you accidentally bump into a car or bus, will you get that question at that very moment ? If your answer is yes, then you are Ramana Maharshi and you can start with self enquiry and you will surely attain the truth by sitting in caves, away from society. Don't read further.

It is true that you attain it, if you practise pranayama and dhyana as many enlightened people guide you, that's how they have really seen the light. I don't deny. But are you pure enough to start with pranayama ? Is the first upa anga 'satya' established within you to qualify for pranayama ? Swami Vivekananda's explanation on satya, commentary on one of the patanjali's yoga sutras- 'when he utter it, becomes truth'. Satya is not telling what we think as satya. It should be established within oneself to that extent, then you are qualified for pranayama. Read the qualities for pranayama given in many books/ scriptures before you sit for pranayama. According to them if you are the qualified one, then please don't read further.

We, to understand klesha-karma, to stop building samskara at this present time, one should understand his own body, where those klesha-karma is situated, -avidye, asmithe, raga, dvesha, abhinivesha. Open that pelvis, get freedom. At the same time open the heart region for the self, by clearing the mask of I-ness. This can only happen in asanas when you practice Iyengar Yoga. Then you will understand the flow of energy, which we call 'Prana'.

Teacher will teach you pranayama when you are ready. Or, just by practising asana as given by Sri BKS Iyengar you culture the breathing in asana, where energy will be equally circulated, if you are inwarded to study & work more inside that means pratyahara is happening, dharana goes along with that. When you stretch out, it stretches into the core. Exhalation becomes thinner and thinner leading you to kumbhaka, dhyana. Then asana becomes meditative. Practise with shraddhe & bhakthi, God's grace, your Punya comes together for samadhi to happen.

That is what holistic health is, Experience Freedom, The Iyengar Yoga.

19/03/2020

My teacher's profound explanation on my understanding :

What is logic ?
Understanding, that we infer through our limited knowledge is logic.
Hence, those who are more intelligent can throw a counter logic anytime. Debate is full of logic and it can never end. A good student of philosophy can prove milk as black and milk as white, both can be proved by the same person if he has some intelligence. If Truth can only be understood through intelligence, there are so many people who can pass IQ tests at the best.
Trust in scriptures to attain the Truth, is the best and easiest path.

Geetha survived without marketing? Okay, will keep this word 'marketing' as it is, though that is not the right expression. Spreading knowledge is not marketing, because the founder/ giver is not gaining anything, on the other hand, the seeker is profiting the highest ! That is why, it becomes our duty to hand over shastras to the next generation as it is. If Krishna would not have liked to spread his immense knowledge like Geetha, would never have been written. In that case, we would have considered Krishna and Arjuna as selfish, to restrict knowledge to themselves and vanish with it ! Krishna is always a giver, he doesn't get tired of giving, he himself the receiver too. Therefore, no pride in giving and no shame in receiving. That is why Geetha is holy.

Praveen rightly said that people are confused and stuck with their problems..worldly problems, software job, marriage etc. Arjuna is also stuck in the middle of Warfield and his confusion was what is dharma-adharma, unlike ours, whom to marry or what job to take up. Ours is not a dharma related problem.

Arjuna's 'tapah' for dharma and love-respect for his people made him caught in the whirlpool. He had to churn his mind, 'swadhyaya'. He decided to offer the results to Krishna (the god), 'eshwara pranidhana'. Then the kriyayoga happens, the Geetha, eternal truth.
Tapas Swadhyaya Eshwara Pranidhanani Kriyayogah || patanjali yogasutra||

Who is Krishna ? Why did Arjuna listen to Krishna and killed his own people in the war ? Would we have done the same, were we Arjuna ?

Firstly, are you Arjuna ? Are you a sanyasi like Arjuna who sees the inner Guru, Krishna within himself ? You can't even measure what is your state or recognize the outer Guru.. how can you place yourself in the place of Arjuna ?

Become Sanjaya to understand Geetha. It is very clearly told that Geetha has to be seen through the eyes of Sanjaya. If you can't see/ understand Geetha, then you are Drutarashtra, the blind.

Logical Bhagavad-Gita

Bhagavad-gita is one the most ancient text, which was written atleast 5000 years back.

In the age where the most updated mobiles, laptops and technology is getting outdated within a year. Can you imagine a text surviving for 5000 years and that too without anyone marketing it. Something impossible!!!!!.
That clearly say it's not just a text it's something divine, logic right?????

Before we get into what Gita has got to teach us. Let's see what we are going through in our life. Biggest problem of today's human being is that we are not able to take decision, not sure which is right?

Teen - should I listen to parents or friends?
Youth - should I join a software job or should I perceive what I enjoy the most?
Middle age - should I marry or not?
Old age - should I stay in our house, son's house or daughter's ?

List will go on......

But if you see logically it's just that we not able to take decision.

Now the best part comes into play, this is where Arjuna was stuck, not able to decide. This logically proves that we are all stuck at the point where Arjuna was stuck. In the middle of the war field called life.

Now every time you read Bhagavad-Gita, you need to see yourself as Arjuna. Not like history in which a war which took place 5000 years back.

Next big question is who is Krishna?
Every situation in life when where we are stuck, not been able to take decision. We always have two voices or option which we are not able to pick upon? Logical?????

This is where practice of yoga or Pathanjali yoga sutra comes into play

Sadana pada, Verse - 1

"Tapah swadhaya ishwara pranidhanani kriya yogah"

Sit back and start a self study, called as Swadhyaya. Do some mistakes in listening to the right voice, keep this as your aim of life. One day without choice you will start listening to the voice of Krishna.

Very fact that you have read this article completely means you are not satisfied with the answers given by your logical mind. Some times you have to keep it aside to find out the truth. Logic right??????

I am Praveen again. my teacher Arathi KN explained the same shloka in class. Her understanding is superior and I am giving you the same here, so that you get the best. And to understand how to understand shastras. Recognize and Trust the accomplished Gurus. Now, read and re-read for better understanding.

Janmana jayate shudrah
Samskarat dwij uchchate
Veda pathanat bhavet viprah
Brahma janati iti brahmanah ||

One who is not aware of birth & death cycle, keeps going the circle without any effort to culture themselves are shudra.

Because of so many lives and samskara (good karma he has done) he goes to the height of the state dwija. DWI is 2, ja is birth. This person has only 2 more lives or births. Hence, dwija's life is 3 lives before moksha (3rd one from the last). But, this person doesn't know his status as dwija. No clue for dwija to be dwija..he might be sudra (!) therefore, he should work hard to keep building good samskaras.

One who has 'seen' the Vedas, the knowledge has been experienced, that means the enlightened ones are vipra. One who has seen the god, realized the limitlessness within himself, now can understand from this shloka (or from scriptures) that his previous janma was dwija and next will be the last ! But, he won't experience this, he only understands it by these kinds of shlokas.

Brahmana. Here is the twist. I love the mystery. In this last and final janma, one must know it..right ? How will he know it is his last janma and he has no more births. Vipra understood only from the scriptures that he has to take one last birth. After that birth, in the last life, how will he know that he has seen the light in previous janma and this is going to be his last janma ? He will recollect the memory of previous janma and do the necessary work and vanish from that life !
---------------

Now, the mystery actually begins. How he vanishes ?

Only shudras have to take birth after proper ending of their previous janma. They will have to learn everything from the beginning. As told, start from LKG..haha.

But, in the end, He doesn't have to take birth as shudras and learn from LKG. He just directly fits in a Human's heart and recollects memory through that Human's mind. The human's heart he fits into is actually guided by a saint. That human will be made ready for that vipra (who is going to be Brahma now). Now, be careful to read this, According to vipra's samskara, the saint is assigned and that human is assigned. Hence even after seeing light as vipra, that vipra should go on doing his best sadhane until he dies in that life. If his sadhane is at the heights then he gets the best human guided by a great saint, who in turn easily cooperates vipra to become Brahma. And in the process, that human sees light and becomes vipra (this also depends on that human's samskara). Human should give his best for vipra to become Brahma, then vipra gives the best knowledge to human before he goes back to Brahma, they exchange ! Runa is cleared. hence the samskara of vipra-going-to-be-brahma is totally attenuated. He is null and full.
----------------

What that human will do now ? His job is assigned by Brahma (one who became Brahma and also the Brahma). With all his physical, intellectual capacity and with bhakthi- shraddhe, now, human who has seen light should complete his assigned job, which he will go on recognizing in his life. He will not have I-ness, hence he is bhaktha in real sense. He will understand who he needs to guide, who is his student, how to understand Vedas/ shastras to give them back to people in simple terms of that present time. These humans are not educated in traditional way like worldly brahmins who do Veda paat, but their understanding is superior (obviously, it's been given). He must understand that he gained it also because of samskaras of the one within him, inner guru. And this human has not done such big sadhane. To clear that debt/runa, he must work hard to complete the assigned job, so that he becomes Brahma in that life itself. His vipra and Brahma state attended in that one life if samskara are attenuated with his karma & bhakthi.
