Pancreatic Cancer & Sudden Diabetes | Why Uncontrolled Sugar Levels Matter

The pancreas is a vital organ that plays two key roles in the body. It produces insulin, which controls blood sugar levels, and it releases digestive enzymes that help break down food.

When pancreatic cancer develops, insulin secretion can be affected. This may lead to sudden or worsening diabetes, even in people whose blood sugar was previously well controlled.

In this video, we explain:

The normal function of the pancreas

How pancreatic cancer affects insulin production

Why sudden uncontrolled diabetes can be a warning sign

When investigations are needed to rule out pancreatic tumors

If someone with long-standing, stable diabetes suddenly experiences poor sugar control, it is important not to ignore it. Further evaluation of the pancreas may be required to detect serious underlying conditions early.

Early investigation can make a critical difference.

Types of Thyroid Cancer & Cure Rates Explained | Dr. Sandeep Nayak |

Thyroid cancer is not a single disease. Different types of thyroid cancer behave very differently and have very different outcomes.

In this video, Dr. Sandeep Nayak explain the four main types of thyroid cancer and their cure rates:

Papillary thyroid cancer – the most common type, with over 95% cure rates

Follicular thyroid cancer – accounts for about 10% of cases, with 85–90% cure rates

Medullary thyroid cancer – a rare type, often associated with familial and genetic causes

Anaplastic thyroid cancer – extremely rare and aggressive, with limited treatment options

The good news is that most thyroid cancers have excellent outcomes, especially when detected early and treated appropriately.

Understanding the type of thyroid cancer is the first step toward the right treatment and reassurance.'

Ulcerative Colitis & Colon Cancer Risk | Dr. Sandeep Nayak |

In this video, Dr. Sandeep Nayak explains how ulcerative colitis increases the risk of colon cancer and what can be done to reduce this risk.

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory condition of the colon. Continuous inflammation damages the inner lining of the colon, leading to dysplasia, an abnormal growth pattern that can progress to cancer over time.

Key points covered:

Why long-standing ulcerative colitis increases colon cancer risk

How longer disease duration and wider colon involvement raise the risk

Why colon cancers in ulcerative colitis can develop faster

The importance of strict medical control of inflammation

Why regular colonoscopy screening is essential

For patients with ulcerative colitis lasting more than 8 years, colonoscopy is recommended every 2–3 years to detect changes early and prevent serious disease.

With proper treatment and consistent screening, the risk of colon cancer can be significantly reduced.

It was a deeply meaningful experience to return to KMC Manipal for MASCON 2026. While I am an alumnus of KMC Mangalore, the Manipal campus holds a special place in my career as it is where I began my journey as a surgeon immediately after my training.

Returning to these familiar grounds as a guest speaker to share my work was a full-circle moment. I had the opportunity to discuss:

D2 Gastrectomy for Stomach Cancer: Focusing on MIS techniques and lymph node clearance.

The Evidence for Robotic Surgery: Specifically its growing role and efficacy in Head & Neck and Breast cancers.

My sincere thanks to the Department of Surgical Oncology at KMC Manipal for the invitation. It was wonderful to reconnect with colleagues and the institution that helped shape my early professional years.

Choosing the Right Thyroid Surgery | Dr Sandeep Nayak |

The type of thyroid surgery chosen depends entirely on the nature of the disease being treated.

In this video, we explain the two main types of thyroid surgery and when each is recommended.

Total Thyroidectomy
This is the preferred surgery for most thyroid cancers. Removing the entire thyroid gland makes follow-up easier and allows doctors to complete treatment and monitoring more effectively.

Hemithyroidectomy (Partial Thyroidectomy)
This involves removing only the affected half of the thyroid gland. It is usually offered for benign thyroid conditions or very small thyroid cancers, typically those less than 1 cm in size.

Understanding the difference between these procedures helps patients make informed decisions and feel confident about their treatment plan.

Always discuss surgical options with your treating surgeon to choose what is best for your condition.
