"Samvatsara" is a Sanskrit term from Vedic literature, meaning 'year'. In Hindu tradition, it signifies a complete cycle of one year. The Hindu calendar follows a 60-year cycle, from Prabhava to Kshaya. These sixty Samvatsaras are grouped into three sets of 20 each. Each set is presided over by a deity:

The first 20 Samvatsaras (Prabhava to Vyaya) are under the guidance of Lord Brahma.
The next 20 (Sarvajit to Parabhava) belong to Lord Vishnu.
The final 20 (Plavanga to Kshaya) are presided over by Lord Shiva.
