Diarrhoea is an increase in the frequency of bowel movements or a decrease in the form of stool (greater looseness of stool). It is a mild and a temporary health condition.

Diarrhoea should not be confused with the frequent passing of stools of normal consistency.

Globally, there are an estimated 2 billion cases of diarrheal disease each year, and 1.9 million children under the age of 5, mostly in developing countries, die from diarrhoea.

Symptoms of Diarrhea are:

1. Watery and loose tools
2. Stomach pain
3. Abdominal cramps
4. Bloating
5. Thirst
6. Weight loss
7. Fever

Some symptoms are considered indicators of a more serious illness - blood or pus, fever, signs of dehydration, persistent vomiting, chronic diarrhoea, or weight loss.

Causes of diarrhoea

1. Microbial infection
2. Many medications, such as antibiotics, can cause
diarrhoea.
3. People who have difficulty digesting lactose have
diarrhoea after eating dairy products
4. Some people have diarrhoea after undergoing abdominal
surgery or gallbladder removal surgery

Diarrhoea is controllable. In case if it is uncontrollable and if you face the severity of the following symptoms you must visit a doctor immediately.

For adults and children:

• Your diarrhoea persists beyond two days (for adults ) / 24
hours ( for children )
• You become dehydrated
• You have severe abdominal or re**al pain
• You have bloody or black stools
• You have a fever above 102 F (39 C)

Diarrhoea can cause severe dehydration, which can be life-threatening if untreated. Dehydration is particularly dangerous in children, older adults and those with weakened immune systems.

CAUTION: Severe Dehydration during Diarrhea can be fatal.

⁣BREAST CANCER

Breast cancer is the most common invasive cancer in women in the worldwide.18.2% of all cancer deaths worldwide, including both men and women, are from breast cancer.

Breast cancer starts when cells in the breast begin to grow out of control. These cells usually form a tumour that can often be seen on an x-ray or felt as a lump. These tumour cells have the ability to grow enormously and spread to the other parts of the body.

Most breast cancers are carcinomas i.e. cancers start in the cells that line
organs and tissues. (These cells are called epithelial cells.) In fact, breast
cancers are often a type of carcinoma called adenocarcinoma, which
starts in cells that make glands (glandular tissue). Breast adenocarcinomas
start in the ducts (the milk ducts) or the lobules (milk-producing glands).

Symptoms of breast cancer

- A lump in a breast

- A pain in the armpits or breast that does not seem to be related to the
woman's menstrual period
- Pitting or redness of the skin of the breast; like the skin of an orange

- A rash around (or on) one of the ni***es

- A swelling (lump) in one of the armpits

- An area of thickened tissue in a breast

- One of the ni***es has a discharge; sometimes it may contain blood

- The ni**le changes in appearance; it may become sunken or inverted

- The size or the shape of the breast changes

- The ni**le skin or breast skin may have started to peel, scale or flake.

Who are at the high risk of developing breast cancer?

Invasive risk factors that affect women and increase the chances of developing breast cancer are -

Age - the risk rises as you get older

Genes - two genes, BRCA1 and BRCA2, greatly increase the risk. Women who have family members with breast or ovarian cancer may wish to be tested for these genes.

Personal factors - beginning periods before age 12 or going through menopause after age 55

Unhealthy lifestyle also increases the chances of developing breast cancer
· Obesity
· Taking birth control pills
· Consumption of alcohol
· Not having children or having your first child after age 35
· Women having dense breasts

Diagnosis of breast cancer

1. Clinical breast exam and breast self-exam
2. Mammograms

How often should women undergo mammograms?

· Women between 40 and 44 years old have the option to start screening with a mammogram every year.
· Women at the age of 45 to 54 should get mammograms every year.
· Women age 55 and older can switch to a mammogram every other year, or they can choose to continue yearly mammograms. Screening should continue as long as a woman is in good health and is expected to live 10 more years or longer.

All women should be familiar with how their breasts normally look and feel. Any noticeable change in the breast must be reported to the healthcare provider immediately.

⁣Cervical cancer

More than 2, 60,000 women in the world are victimised to cervical cancer every year. It is essential to educate women about the symptoms and causes of cervical cancer.

Before starting with it, let us know the location of the cervix in the female body.

The cervix is the lower part of the uterus in the human female reproductive system. It is cylindrical in shape and it connects uterus and the va**na. When the cells grow abnormally and multiply rapidly without any control at this region leading to the formation of the mass of cells called tumours results in CERVICAL CANCER.

The cancerous tumours on the walls of the cervix are caused due to the viral infection of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV).It is a s*xually transmitted virus.

Who is most vulnerable to HPV infection?

· Women having multiple s*xual partners

· Women being chain smokers

· Women suffering from other SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES (STD) such as Chlamydia, Gonorrhea and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS)

· Women getting pregnant at very young age (at age of 17 and below) and have multiple pregnancies.

· Women undergoing prolonged mental stress.

The symptoms of cervical cancer are not noticeable at the early stage of the disease. Later, they are evident.

The common symptoms of cervical cancer include:

· Vaginal bleeding: This includes bleeding between periods, after s*xual in*******se or post-menopausal bleeding.

· Unusual va**nal discharge: A watery, pink or foul-smelling discharge is common.

· Pelvic pain: Pain during in*******se or at other times may be a sign of abnormal changes to the cervix or less serious conditions.

Signs of advanced stages of cervical cancer

· Weight loss

· Fatigue

· Back pain

· Leg pain or swelling

· Leakage of urine or faeces from the va**na

· Bone fractures

NOTE: IF YOU ARE SUFFERING FROM ANY OF THE ABOVE SYMPTOMS, CONSULT YOUR GYNAECOLOGIST IMMEDIATELY.

Cervical cancer can be diagnosed from two simple preliminary tests and they are:

1. Papanicolaou (PAP) smear test - This test is performed by gently scrapes the outside wall of the cervix and va**na taking samples of the cells for testing.
A thin layer of cells is transferred onto a slide after removing blood or mucus
from the sample. Computer screening (often called Auto Pap or Focal Point) uses a computer software to scan the sample for abnormal cells.

2. Pelvic examination-In this examination, the doctor feels a woman's uterus, va**na, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, bladder, and re**um to check for any unusual changes. A Pap test is often done at the same time.

Women above the age of 30 years should mandatorily undergo PAP smear test in order to monitor their cervical health.

ViPRAA DIAGNOSTICS AND RESEARCH CENTRE; No. 738, Krishnarajapura, Bangalore, Karnataka 560036 offers you the PAP smear test under various women health check packages and also as an individual test.

THYROID

THYROID GLAND is one of the largest ductless gland located inside the neck under the voice box. This butter- fly shaped gland is indulged in the production of master hormones that are responsible for controlling nearly every physiological activity in our body, for example, the regulation of body metabolism and body weight management. Thyroid hormones are also required for physical growth and development in children.

Thyroid gland releases three main master metabolism hormones, namely:
• Di-iodothyronine (T2)
• Triiodothyronine (T3)
• Thyroxin (T4)

These hormones interact with all other hormones of our body, including insulin and s*x hormones like estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. The mutual interaction between the thyroid hormones and other hormones of our body justifies the fact that the abnormal thyroid level links up with numerous health complications such as Hypothyroidism, Hyperthyroidism and thyroid cancer.

Let us now discuss the abnormal thyroid conditions:

Hypothyroidism

The thyroid hormone when released in a very low quantity leads to this condition and is often related to iodine deficiency. The people suffering from hypothyroidism usually experience symptoms like:
• Lethargy
• Sudden weight gain
• Rough and scaly skin texture
• Hair loss
• Highly sensitive to cold temperature
• Low basal temperature (basal body temperature is your
temperature when you're fully at rest)
Any of the above symptoms can be suggestive of an underactive thyroid.

Hyperthyroidism

Hyperthyroidism is associated with high secretion of the T4 hormone by the thyroid gland. Doctors term this condition as "Thyrotoxicosis". The people suffering from hyperthyroidism usually experience symptoms like:
• Lack of concentration
• Feeling emotional weak and stressful
• Frequent bowel movements
• Irregular menstrual periods in women
• Weight loss or weight gain
• Rapid heart beat
• Lack of menstrual periods in women
Initially, the above symptoms may be unrecognisable by the patients and then become worse as thyroxin level shoots up higher.

LIST OF MEDICAL TESTS TO DIAGONISE THYROID PROBLEMS
1. Thyroid stimulating hormone test (TSH)
2. T3 (Triiodothyronine) and T4( Thyroxin) test
3. Thyroid antibody testing
4. Basal body temperature
5. Thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) stimulation test

If you are facing or experiencing the above symptoms of illnesses consult your doctor immediately and monitor your thyroid health.

HEAT STRESS

Heat stress is a condition where the body’s temperature regulation fails and body temperature rise to critical levels. The increase in the temperature leads to a high implication of stress and heat related illness causing discomfort to the human body.

Let us understand the health problems which are emerging due to the heat stress or summer stress.

• Heatstroke- During heat stroke, the body temperature of the victim increases up to 40 degree Celsius. It directly affects the central nervous system (CNS). The person collapses and becomes unconscious. He or she may be comatose
immediately. This can also affect other organ systems such as kidney, heart etc.
• Heat exhaustion- It is a condition where a person sweats excessively, due to this the blood pressure increases and he or she faces other symptoms of illness such as muscle cramp (usually in the abdomen, stomach, and legs), headache, vomiting or fainting. This can develop into heatstroke.
• Dizziness- Excessive heat in the body causes an increase in blood flow to the skin and rapid blood pooling in the legs, resulting in decreased blood flow to the brain. Thus the person feels light headedness before fainting.
• Heat cramps- It is a muscle pain which occurs when a person is indulged in strenuous activity in a hot environment due to the depletion in the salt and water content in the body. This is also a symptom of heat exhaustion problem.
• Heat rashes- It is a skin related problem where red pimples or small blisters appear on the neck, upper chest, under the breasts and on the back. This causes itching and burning sensation.

WHAT CAUSES HEAT STRESS DURING SUMMER?

1. Dehydration- Loss of water from the body through
excessive sweating causes dehydration.
2. Sun exposure- Exposing to the sun especially on hot days,
between 11 am and 3 am can cause heat stress.
3. Lack of proper ventilation – People living or working in the
poorly ventilated area is usually prone to heat stress
during the summer season.

HOW TO PREVENT HEAT STRESS DURING SUMMER?

1. Drink plenty of water. Drink at least 4-5 litres of water in a
day
2. Don’t skip your meals. Include a lot of vegetables in your
meals.
3. Keep your working area or living area air conditioned.
Make sure that there is proper ventilation in the rooms.
4. Avoid going out during a sunny day, especially between
11am -3 pm.
5. If you must be outdoors, protect yourself from the sun by
covering your head with a hat or a cloth and use
sunglasses.
6. Have a good sleep during night time.

“PREVENTION IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN CURE”.
Use the above health tips to prevent yourself from undergoing heat stress. Stay fit and energetic this summer.

Computed Tomography Scan (CT Scan)

A Computed Tomography (CT) scan is a special scanning procedure which is used to obtain cross-sectional images of the body using X-rays and a computer. To evaluate the organs like brain, neck, spine, chest, abdomen, pelvis and sinuses, CT scans are performed. Patients are advised to undergo a CT scan to further assess the abnormalities recognised in other diagnostic tests such as ultrasound scan or X – ray scan.

Types of CT Scans and problems detected by them:

• Head or Brain CT Scan: Is performed to detect the mass of cells (tumour), blood vessels deformity, and area of bleeding in the brain and to analyse the structure of the skull.

• Neck CT Scan: Is performed to study a lump or mass in the neck or to see the enlarged glands such as Thyroid glands etc.

• Chest CT Scan: Is performed to study a lump or mass in the chest.

• Abdominal and Pelvic CT Scan: Is performed to detect the abnormalities in the liver, spleen, kidneys, pancreas, adrenal glands and in the digestive system.

• A Sinus CT Scan: Is performed to diagnose Sinus disease (inflammation and fluid accumulation in the air cavities present in the face)

• A Spine CT Scan: Is performed to detect the fracture in the spine, herniated disc (Slip disc) and narrowing of the spinal canal (Spinal Stenosis).

How to prepare for a CT Scan?

There is no preparation as such for CT Scan. But if the patient is injected or orally administrated with a contrast [a dye which helps in distinguishing between normal tissues from the abnormal tissues], then he or she must be on an empty stomach few hours before the procedure commences.

Things to be informed to your doctor before a CT Scan:

• If you are a pregnant
• If you a have heart and kidney related issues
• If you are a diabetic patient
• If you are allergic to some drugs
• If you are Asthma patient
Caution: Do not hold or wear metal objects such as hair clips, watch, chain etc, as it prevents a clear view of the body.

CT Scan provides a detailed internal structure of a human body, thus it is considered to be an advanced scientific technology in the recent diagnostic medical science.

We, VIPRA DIAGNOSTICS, located at #738, Krishnarajapura, Bengaluru, Karnataka 560036, provide you with an eminent CT scan facility at our diagnostic centre.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging or MRI
MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. MRI is a scanning modality which uses non-ionic techniques to create detailed images of internal parts of the body. It is a non – invasive methodology (no instruments are intended into the human body) used by the physicians to diagnose medical conditions of the body and thereby providing required treatments.
How does MRI work??
MRI creates a powerful magnetic field, radio frequency pulses to produce detailed pictures of organs, soft tissues, bone and virtually all other internal body structures.
As the name indicates, an MRI scanner has two powerful magnets which are the most important components of the machine. The other components are Gradient Coils, Radio Frequency (RF) Coils, and Computer System. As we know human body comprises of 70% of water (H2O) and the MRI depends on the magnetic properties of a Hydrogen atom to produce images. Each Hydrogen atoms is composed of single Protons. The protons (positively charged elementary particle) acts as a catalyst while an MRI as they are sensitive and react to a magnetic field. The magnetic field is created by the passing of current into the device, through the Gradient Coils and RF Coils creates signals from the energy generated. As the human body enters the scanner, the hydrogen atoms inside the body first align in one direction and subsequently alters its course and return back to its original alignment thereby enabling the computer to process the signal and create slices of images.
Diagnosis by MRI Scanning
MRI Scanning is performed to diagnose conditions depending upon the region for which the scan has been done. The general medical conditions are:
- Detection of Tumors
- Detection of Cysts
- Detection of Inflammation
- Detection of problems in Arteries and Vein, like blockage in the blood vessel, bulging in the blood vessel
- Detection of Cancerous Cells
- Detection of nerve related injuries
- Detection of Diseases
- Detection of Injuries and Abnormalities in Bones. Etc.
These detections are diagnosed for different regions in the human body like Head, Chest, Abdomen, Pelvic, Spine, Knee, Heart ( MRA or Magnetic Resonance Angiography) depending upon the symptoms in the body and prescriptions by the Doctor.
