We got an opportunity to present Sohum Technology to the honorable Vice President of India, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar, Union Health Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya & Prof. Vinod K Paul, Member Niti Ayog, at the International Symposium on Health Technology Assessment, showcasing successful health technologies from India that has undergone HTA.

We started the process of health technology assessment with the National Health System Resource Centre (NHSRC) and later the Department of Health Research (DHR), the Ministry of Health took over and completed the evaluation. ICMR Bhuvaneshwar rigorously researched and did fieldwork to validate the device. In HTA, the technology is evaluated on clinical and cost-of-care parameters. Sohum scored high on clinical efficacy (Sensitivity 100% & Specificity 97.3%) and reducing health expenditure (no requirement of soundproof room, reduced followups and referrals). The analysis is published in the Indian Academy of Pediatrics journal and a detailed report is available on ICMR weblink. I have immense gratitude for the ICMR Bhuvaneshwar team (Dr. Sanghamitra, Dr. Debdutta, Dr. Krushna, Dr. Ramesh, and the ICMR team) DHR team who remained committed and ensured high standards of clinical and economic analysis. Sohum is the gold standard in newborn hearing screening and is designed so that any healthcare worker can use it with ease. Also, I am proud of my Sohum team who has shown immense patience, belief in the scientific process, and a sense of pride in creating high-quality health technologies in India. Sohum also received BIS certification for its quality.

With the visionary leadership of the State of Punjab Sohum AABR system got implemented in 22 districts of Punjab. Punjab is the first state to go for Universal Newborn Hearing Screening (UNHS) in phases (covering high-risk & non-risk babies) using the Sohum advanced AABR with a telemedicine-based centralized response system to screen all babies born in Punjab. Early hearing screening saves the baby from lifelong speech disability providing preventive care from the irreversible speech loss.

Sohum has made the hearing screening program & technology reach African countries. 90% of the babies born with hearing loss are in the developing world (~800,000 babies are born with hearing loss every year), and all these babies face irreversible speech loss due to a lack of an effective early screening program. Sohum technology which is indigenously developed in India with the support of the Department of Biotechnology can provide a comprehensive care model for the developing and underdeveloped countries and provide equitable health to many babies.

We appreciate the effort of all healthcare workers and clinicians who leave no stone unturned to screen babies for hearing loss in clinics, hospitals, and remote villages. 26 million (2.6 crores) babies are born every year in India, & they are born in institutions and at home. Sohum is enabling the Govt. programs like Rashtriya Bal Swastha Kalyan Karyakram (RBSK), National Program for Prevention and Control of Deafness (NPPCD) to provide hearing screening in the Govt. sector. Our technology is evaluated and used by the ICMR team in Orissa, and proven to be cost-effective, easy to use by healthcare workers, and accurate for use in resource-poor settings of India and other developing countries.

Early identification of babies for hearing loss will save their speech and prevent disability. Sohum Innovation Lab with its novel AABR gold standard technology is committed to screening babies for hearing loss, no matter where they are born! State governments of Tripura, Himachal Pradesh, and several public health setups are using Sohum technology for their early identification program. We have programs with the private hospitals (Apollo cradle, Manipal, Rainbow hospital, and many hospitals in tier I, II, III cities). Every baby needs hearing loss screening just like the way we vaccinate every baby.

We interviewed a parent (with consent) whose child got benefited from Sohum screening & early intervention. Though they came to us a little late when the child was 2 years old, & l the Sohum team conducted testing on the child and found the child to have hearing loss, we started the intervention. Two years of continuous support and the child could speak. Nothing is more satisfying to the Sohum team than seeing the child speak.
