Thinking that weight loss and health is all about energy balance or calories in/calories out, vastly oversimplifies the truth. The food industry and government agencies love this myth because it keeps you buying more junk food, which they suggest you eat in moderation. A calorie is a calorie, right? Wrong. This myth that refuses to die keeps people from getting and staying healthy, as well as losing weight and keeping it off. Truth is, there are good and bad calories. When we eat, our food interacts with our biology, a complex adaptive system that instantly transforms every bite. Food is more than just calories and flavors. Food is information telling our cells what to do. The highest-quality calories comes from whole foods. Calories from high-quality whole foods are naturally lower in calories as compared with processed foods. This is why calorie counting isn’t necessary when you eat fresh, high quality foods.

Mounting research shows that there is no magic bullet to treat heart disease, cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, arthritis, allergies, digestive disorders, headaches, fatigue, or any of the myriad problems we suffer from in the 21st century. But increasing evidence also shows us something else. It shows that food is the most powerful “drug” we have, not just to prevent, but also to treat, cure, and reverse most chronic illnesses.
Food contains information that talks to your genes, turning them on or off and affecting their function moment to moment. The foods you eat are the keystrokes that send messages to your genes telling them what to do—creating health or disease.

In a lab, all calories are the same when you burn them. But not when you eat them. Your body is a complicated biochemical, hormonal soup controlled mostly by what you eat. So here’s my rule: If nature made it eat it, if man made it leave it. I'm sure you've noticed that a fresh avocado or kiwi doesn’t come with a nutrition facts label, a barcode, or ingredient list. If you are eating food that comes with a label, focus on the ingredient list, not the “nutrition facts” that are mostly designed and developed under huge food industry lobby efforts to confuse and confound your efforts to eat healthy. If you don’t recognize a word, can’t pronounce it, or it is in Latin, or you don’t have it in your cupboard and wouldn’t use it in a recipe—maltodextrin, for instance—then don’t use it. On every ingredient list, note that the most abundant component is listed first. The others follow in descending order by weight. Be conscious of ingredients that may not be on the list. Also beware of foods with health claims on the label. These claims usually signal a marketing ploy to make you think they’re good for you when they’re really just healthy pretenders. Things like sports beverages, energy bars, and even multigrain breads (which often contain high-fructose corn syrup) fall into this category.
