Specific learning disability in children’s
It is very disheartening to know that an 8th standard boy ended his life, studying in a prestigious school in Bangalore. The only stress he had was, he was not able to perform well in mathematics. He was interested in all other subjects including extracurricular activities.
Some children can have normal intelligence, perform well in many areas, but they can have difficulty in certain subjects like mathematics or languages etc. This disability is called as specific learning disability.
In the beginning itself, if we can identify these children having difficulty in specific subject, they can be given special coaching to cope with that subject. In spite of special education, if these children are not able to do well in that specific subject there are other alternatives. Eg. child having difficulty in a language, there is a provision to get exemption from that subject in the board exam, provided the disability is assessed and certified by the competent authorities. Difficulties in other subjects like mathematics or science, there is an alternative to choose subjects of their choice in an open school. By these available alternate options, children with specific learning disability can be benefited.
We advise parents and teachers to take a note of this disability in the early phase, and consult mental health professionals for remedial measures.
