Did you know that your brain literally goes through structural changes because of stress in childhood? To make it more specific, the volume of your dorsomedial prefrontal cortex gets reduced by 7.2 percent when emotional maltreatment is experienced during childhood. If you like many of my clients have gone through unbelievable trauma, and immense pain due to unhelpful parenting strategies, and find yourself being more emotionally sensitive, know that this could be the reason.

What a treat for a huge Harry Potter fan! I am enjoying the acceptance and commitment therapy conference so much that I have hardly slept for more than an hour in the last two days (the conference is happening in the night since it is New Orleans time). Privileged to witness stellar psychologists show up with vulnerability and willingness to put forth the best knowledge available out there!

Depression is hard to understand, even for mental health professionals. Su***de due to depression is even more hard to comprehend by our small brains.

I have been reading reports about how this might be a conspiracy theory, but I really wonder sometimes if BECAUSE su***de is so so uncomfortable to hear, do we look for something else like, ‘this was an accidental death’ or ‘this was because of blackmail,’ so that we can relieve ourselves from that discomfort?

Could we all sit with this discomfort, make room for the heaviness that we feel when we hear death news related to su***de, and give mental health the respect it deserves?

Reach out for professional help. Psychological counselling degrees and trainings are there for a purpose. If you don’t like a therapist’s style/way of working/therapeutic approach, keep looking for help. Your mind might quickly jump to saying ‘give up’, but whose life is this? That word machine inside of you that chatters unhelpful stuff, or yours?

The story so far...

Aware Mental Health was started out of a need to provide confidential psychotherapy sessions in a safe, warm space — away from all the hospital vibes and stigma-based settings. Psychological distress is perhaps the most normal emotion that we go through universally across the world, and yet people refrain from seeing a therapist. The main reasons for this could be that we have had terrible experiences with people around us who have shamed us and blamed us for our problems, or that you ended up going to a counsellor whose only mode of working with you was to to lecture you, reassure you, tell you to think positively, and give you advice.

Fortunately, science has come a long way ahead to provide measurable evidence that psychotherapeutic approaches like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), and now the globally emerging contextual-CBT called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) work — they really do — and they involve empathy, compassion, self-compassion, forgiveness, gratitude, finding meaning in life, in addition to also helping you cope with difficult thoughts and feelings that we label as anxiety, depression, trauma, shame, and low self-esteem.

Your inner world could be filled with worry, gloominess, an I-am-not-good-enough narrative, hurtful memories from the past, or just plain existential crisis. At Aware, you will work on an active form of therapy — that doesn’t just involve talking about your problems but also working on psychological skills to process your difficult thoughts and feelings more effectively.

Now with a well-trained therapist driven by the best science available, schedule a session to feel lighter, more understood, and overcome the emotional storms that weigh you down.
