=> Is Spondylitis a complete diagnosis?
Very often I see patients who believe the cause of their pain is spondylitis without knowing that spondylitis is a generic term and is not a complete description of their condition.

What is Spondylitis?
By definition, it is the degeneration (wear and tear) of joints between the spinal vertebrae. As we age, some degree of spondylitic changes are normal in your body, and they do not imply that you will have pain.
So, having Spondylitis as diagnosis alone does not help to determine your treatment process. The real challenge is to find out why you have pain as each person will present differently and requires a variation in how the therapist approaches their rehab.

Make sure a thorough evaluation is done before your therapist starts physiotherapy treatment.

=> Back Matters - Understanding 'Cumulative Trauma'

Back problems are mostly a result of Cumulative Trauma - excessive wear and tear caused by repetitive tasks, forceful exertions, sustained or awkward positions. For example, doing some kind of repetitive work like bending, lifting, twisting, prolonged sitting without adequate strength and mobility training may put you at higher risk for back pain.
Think of that guy who had severe pain while trying to pick a pencil from the floor or someone who had a disc herniation after sneezing too forcefully. There are good chances that their current painful experience is a symptom of the dysfunction that has been building up for a long time.

This is one of several posts where we will share key facts about back pain that should help you manage your condition a little better.
Stay tuned for more...

=> Physiotherapy for Pregnant women - What Works?
An excellent study published in July 2014 issue of JOSPT(USA) that analyzed previous 22 key studies from 1992-2013 found physiotherapy to be effective in pregnancy related pain.

So, what really works?
1) Focus of exercises should be to strengthen muscles around the spine and pelvic floor.
2) General endurance exercises and balance training is also found to be helpful.
3) Combine manual therapy, exercises and patient education for better relief.
4) Make sure to get a thorough evaluation done by an expert Physiotherapist before starting your exercise program.

Barefoot running - Good or Bad?

Few things to consider:
1) There is some evidence that running barefoot may help to strengthen our foot muscles and reduce the impact while running.
2) But this research is not enough to give conclusive evidence yet.
3) There is no clear evidence to prove running in shoes is bad for our feet.
4) Exercise caution with barefoot running if you have Calf Strains, Metatarsal Stress Fracture or if you are dealing with Achilles Tendinopathy.

Conclusion?
There is no clear verdict so far.
But, if you are new to barefoot running, build your mileage slowly to avoid risk of injury.

To wear shoes or not to wear shoes? That is the question these days. Take a look at some of the actual scientific research and then decide for yourself whether to join in on the barefoot trend.

=> Have you gotten used to your back pain?

Another research evidence published in the issue of Journal of Sports Physical Therapy (USA) that indicates early treatment is the key to control your back pain and ensure long term relief... http://www.jospt.org/doi/pdf/10.2519/jospt.2012.0503

Key highlights of the research article:
1) Build capability - Focus on staying active, bed rest should be minimized
2) Comprehensive evaluation is a MUST - Not all back pains are the same. For example, treatment for acute back pain is different from treatment of chronic back pain.
3) Combine Manual Therapy and exercises to effectively treat your back condition.

=> Yes, Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome can be treated effectively with physiotherapy.

The temporomandibular joint is the joint that connects your jaw to your skull. When this joint is injured or damaged, it can lead to a pain disorder called TMJ syndrome.

Here are a few tips that can help you manage TMJ pain:
1) Tongue position - Try to rest your tongue on the roof of your mouth/ palate during rest to keep the jaw relaxed.
2) Neck posture - Neck muscles are closely related to TMJ. Poor posture can increase the tension in neck muscles leading to increase in TMJ pain.
Human head is intended to sit directly on top of your shoulders. From a side view you should ideally see the ear lobe directly on top of the
shoulder joint. Correcting your posture will help relax neck muscles.
3) Support - Use your fist to support your chin as you yawn to prevent your jaw from locking open.
4) Sleeping position - Avoid sleeping on your stomach. Sleep on your side with pillow support between neck and shoulder.
5) Avoid chewing gum and eating hard foods like apple, corn on the cob, whole fruits, etc.

=> Maximize your benefit from Fish oil and other Omega-3 supplements

Fantastic scientific information. Key highlights of the article:
1) Maintain balance between Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids.
2) Eat more foods derived from plants instead of foods derived from seeds.
3) Ask your doctor to prescribe a blood test that checks the ratio between
Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids to determine the real risk of heart
disease.
4) Last but not the least, avoid all packaged foods.

This study indicates that physiotherapy could be as effective as surgery for spine conditions like spinal stenosis.
What is spinal stenosis? - Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of spaces in the spine (see pic) that results in pressure on the spinal cord and/or the nerves. This often leads to back pain or pain in the leg.

So, if your doctor has prescribed surgery for your spine problem, it may be worthwhile getting a second opinion from a physiotherapist. Of course, a physiotherapist that is up to date with the latest physiotherapy treatment approaches.

=> Should you see a PHYSIO for your DIZZINESS?
People usually go to a physician or an ENT specialist to find solution for persistent dizziness. But, if they are not able to cure your dizziness, you should consider seeing a physiotherapist, especially when:
- Your ENT specialist says there is nothing wrong with your ear.
- Your dizzness is associated with neck discomfort, reduced neck movement, headaches, or nausea.

In cases above, your dizziness could be due to an underlying neck problem, possibly Cervicogenic Dizziness.
