MBBS is the new superspecialisation !!
MBBS is sadly the most underrated degree in India . I see many influencers making content on why “ your child should not do MBBS “ !! Gone are the days when MBBS used to be the most saught career .
Have you wondered why such transition ?
MBBS students are taught 19 different subjects to a basic level and based on which subject the students connect with more they pursue their PG degree after most challenging PG NEET examination . As of early 2026, India has approximately 129,603 to 130,000 MBBS seats across over 824 medical colleges . However according to the 2025-26 academic session, there are approximately 68,000 to 74,000+ PG medical seats (MD/MS/Diploma/DNB) in India . So 1 in 2 MBBS get some PG seat , yearly there is average backlog of 60000 MBBS graduate who stay with the UG degree only !
So let’s see what s job market for just MBBS degree holders !
Job Roles for MBBS Graduates
1. Duty Medical Officer / Resident Medical Officer (RMO): Positions available at various private hospitals salary: ₹6LPA, for freshers In 10 years they make just 12L PA , night duties are mandate and hardly any career growth
2. General Physician / Consultant: Roles in home care, corporate health, or private clinics with salary 5 to 6L PA , but no night duty yet no growth
3. Telemedicine Specialist: Remote work for health platforms such as Letsdoc, focusing on remote care salary ranges from rs 15 per completed consultation ( yes that’s true!!!) to rs 7L PA
4 . Medical Consultant in Specialized Clinics: Roles in dermatology and aesthetic medicine (e.g., Bodycraft, Oliva Clinic) as procedure counsellor salary 6L PA to 12 L after a decade experience ( just beating inflation)
5.medical Officer in govt PHC , the vacancy is minimal , and salary is 65 k PM to max 1 L in 8 years here to just beating inflation
6. Non clinical roles / Corporate Roles: Opportunities include Clinical Operations Manager, Health Tech Advisor, Medical Coder, or Medico-Legal Expert or drug analysis salaries from 50 k to 1.3L
7. Medical Educator: Working with EdTech companies to train for NEET PG/USMLE/ UG
Salary ranges from 80k to 1.5 L but here again no growth
Although this looks amazing with so many variety of job opportunities post MBBS there is something common in these job roles
1. No financial growth to sustain a growing family in 2 -3 tier cities
2. No skills taught to practice by themselves
3. No recognition or fame or individual brand
4. Salaries are way less than their piers who are specialist or super specialist .
Generally their piers who are specialist and super specialist earn 10x to 30x more in India
MBBS is the new SUPERSPECIALISATION
The public today need a good general physician who can treat them well for all general ailments ( head to toe) , public fear the bills at corporate hospitals and want to cling on to good family physician who is easily reachable and help them with all basic ailments which needs immediate medical attention but not hospitalisation at affordable costs and personal touch and care .
India today lacks such physicians who are well trained in all 19 subjects and can treat from Hairfall to medicate for GLP Injections for weight loss and diabetes,
This is because in MBBS the theory is so vast but students lack practical exposure leading to struggle in treating patients in reality , thus they fear opening a private clinic and rending to local population. The best lucrative career for MBBS is practising as family physician where career will begin with 50 K per month and by 10 years in same clinic and locality can scale to 15 to 20 x times !!! Yes that’s true and in par with salaries of specialist and super specialists with added time freedom as a result of private practice and low risk practice with great peace of mind .
As a successful physician from shreepolycliniclab bangalore, we hire MBBS graduates and give them practical training and handholding as they treat the patients . MBBS syllabus is broken down to 400 short practical topics and taught to the junior physicians via PPT presentations
As a result over 2 years our MBBS graduate are trained to diagnose varieties of medical ailments and treat them effectively.
Thus can open their own set up across the country and live their dream life .
