First Tuesday in May is regarded as world Asthma Day. If we consider 5 to 6 decades before, it was very rare that a particular day was declared to spread awareness about any illness, But today due to increase of the incidence in the society, to spread awareness a particular day is declared in the name of the Illness. The inaugural world Asthma day was held in 1998.
Asthma in simple is a breathing problem. Let’s us keep it simple as everyone who harbors the illness will be knowing the microscopic factors about the illness. Now the question arises as why the incidence has become more from past one to two decade .The answer is simple due to increased urbanization ,air pollution, decreased food quality, increased low immunity levels in the individuals, increased drug resistance of the illness in individuals, low physical activity.
Everyone who harbors the illness will definitely be knowing how asthma is diagnosed & treated in the contemporary medicine. So I would not go in to details of it.
We shall more try to give importance on Ayurveda way of managing Asthma. Majorly in asthamic attacks patient suffers from serious breathing problems for a period of Time, if proper care is not given, there is a very good chance that the persons land in to Emergency room.
During the asthmatic attacks ,there is a very high level of sticky substance that is secreted in the lung, due to which ,the target were oxygen needs to be reached does not reach the location, as a result the patient suffers from breathing problems. Usually Asthma attacks are more in the early mornings, in Nights, when you work harder & during the increased stress levels.
Astama & Ayurveda.
You do not get direct reference of asthma in Ayurveda, instead there is diseases called Svasa in Ayurveda, which closely resembles the symptoms of Asthma.
Let us understand as how simple steps can ease the symptoms. If anyone is following us carefully, in our previous articles, we spoke about a concept called Agni & kapha dosha & vata.
Agni in the body undergoes dimension, as a result the mechanism to keep vata & kapha in normal state fails in the body ,vata being the lighter dosha gets easily arrested by kapha dosha. Kapha is a very thick dosha, which when accumulated in the body can obstruct the channels of circulation. We shall understand the scenario in simple steps. Consider a rainy day in hot summer, once the rain comes & goes in summer, the wet ground dry up easily because temperature is high during the summer (Agni is normal),let us consider the same rain during the rainy season, the wet grounds don’t dry easily because the temperature is low, as a result you can see accumulation of water on the roads. This is a exact scenario what happens in your lungs.
Managing Asthma with diet-
As I told it is due to increased kapha in the body, stay away from cold items & those food items which are heavy to digest. Use more ginger, black pepper, dhaniya patha ,salt in your diet. Black pepper & salt needs to be used cautiously in Pitta Prakruti people.Have food when it is warm & hot. Please split the phlegm, if it is occasionally coming out, as removing it relaxes the lung. Avoid polluted air, try to stay in the environment were the trees are more. Avoid closed rooms, were air cannot move.
Usually vamana is administered to lessen the attacks, but the procedure needs to be under the supervision of the Doctor.
Asthma needs a serious attention, if you are obese, lean, child & age old person.
