A study in the Indian Journal of Hematology and Blood Transfusion found that a higher cumulative red blood cell transfusion burden was associated with shorter overall survival among patients with myelodysplastic syndromes. The study was based on data for 86 patients. Median overall survival was 1,240 days for patients in the low transfusion burden group and 410 days for those in the high transfusion burden group.
Higher Transfusion Burden Predicts Shorter Survival in MDS

Baseline hemoglobin at diagnosis and patient age independently predict transfusion density, whereas other hematologic factors do not.

Patients with acute heavy menstrual bleeding may require red blood cell transfusions and had higher treatment costs, according to a study in The Lancet Obstetrics, Gynecology & Women's Health. The UK study was based on data for 1,300 patients who were admitted for heavy menstrual bleeding and received at least one unit of red blood cells. The study group received an average of 2.2 units per admission.
