What is Hba1c?

The hemoglobin A1c test tells you your average level of blood sugar over the past 2 to 3 months. It's also called HbA1c, glycated hemoglobin test, and glycohemoglobin.

People who have diabetes need this test regularly to see if their levels are staying within range. It can tell if you need to adjust your diabetes medicines. The A1c test is also used to diagnose diabetes.

What Is Hemoglobin?

Hemoglobin is a protein found in red blood cells. It gives blood its red color, and it's job is to carry oxygen throughout your body.

How the Test Works?

The sugar in your blood is called glucose. When glucose builds up in your blood, it binds to the hemoglobin in your red blood cells. The A1c test measures how much glucose is bound.

Red blood cells live for about 3 months, so the test shows the average level of glucose in your blood for the past 3 months.

If your glucose levels have been high over recent weeks, your hemoglobin A1c test will be higher.

What is Urine Culture?

It’s a test to check for germs or bacteria in your urine that can cause a urinary tract infection (UTI).

Your urinary tract includes the kidneys, bladder, and the tubes that carry your p*e (ureters and the

urethra). An infection usually starts in the bladder or urethra (the tube your p*e comes out of). But it

can affect any part of this system.

If you have an infection, there may be a burning feeling when you p*e. Or, you may feel like you

need to go, but nothing or very little comes out. If you also have a fever or belly pain, it may mean

you have a more serious infection.

How to prepare for urine culture?

1. Wash your hands.
2. Wipe the area around where you p*e with the cleaning pad or tissue.
3. P*e a little in the toilet first and stop. Don’t p*e in the cup right away. Then, collect about 1 or 2

ounces in the cup. Make sure the container doesn’t touch your skin. Finish p*eing in the toilet. This

is called “midstream” urine catch.
4.Wash your hands again.

Tough Emotions After Your Stroke: 5 Tips

Not only can a stroke cause physical challenges, but it can also cause mental health struggles. Understanding the emotional as well as the physical effects of a stroke can prepare you and help you recover faster.

Approximately 1 in 3 people experience depression during their recovery. About 20 percent will develop major depressive disorder, which means the symptoms are bad enough to impact a person’s day-to-day functioning.

Common symptoms include feelings of sadness and worthlessness, disruptions in sleep and appetite, and lack of energy.

Depression is sometimes hard to recognize because the stroke itself may cause some of the same symptoms.

Those struggling to cope with new physical limitations from stroke may withdraw from others. This reaction also may stem from depression.

What’s behind mood and behavior changes?

Although depression is the most common mental health concern for stroke survivors, you may see other changes in mood and behavior as well. These may include:

- Irritability and impatience
- Uncontrolled expressions of emotion that may seem inappropriate
- Apathy or less emotional engagement

Stroke can also cause cognitive changes that may make it difficult to interact with others. Those recovering from a stroke may not recognize emotional expressions or sarcasm from others.

The family thinks this person has become completely heartless because they don’t recognize when someone else is sad. But that’s just one of the symptoms of the stroke.

A lot of these changes resolve in the first weeks or months after a stroke. Depression gets better for a lot of people over the first year. A lot of the more dramatic changes are often fairly short-lived.

That said, recovery isn’t always a straight line.

1. Recognize the symptoms and seek help.

If people have never had problems with their mental health in the past, they may not be open to seeing a therapist. But it’s important to recognize that a stroke can cause a change in mood just as it can cause a change in the function of a hand.

Often, a therapist can help people work through challenging emotions.

2. Address mood changes because they can have a ripple effect on recovery.

Those who are struggling with depression may not fully engage in their rehabilitation. Or, they sometimes get discouraged with the process. This can lead to poorer outcomes. It’s important to see how the healthy emotions also foster a better recovery overall.

3. Seek social support.

It’s easy for stroke survivors to become isolated, especially if they’re struggling with new physical limitations. But engaging with others can make a big difference in recovery.

“Someone’s who’s isolated doesn’t recover as well.”

4. Learn more about what’s ahead.

It’s important for caregivers and loved ones to learn about mood and behavior disruption. They need to know what to expect and understand that the survivor isn’t just being mean or stubborn.

5. Caregivers: Take care of yourself.

Caring for a loved one who’s had a stroke is often draining. It’s important to take time to recharge and seek your own support as necessary.

Although the mood and behavior changes that often come with stroke are challenging and distressing, addressing these problems can help make recovery faster and easier.

18/06/2019

The Widal test is one method that may be used to help make a presumptive diagnosis of enteric fever, also known as typhoid fever.

How Is Typhoid Fever Diagnosed?

After the ingestion of contaminated food or water, the Salmonella bacteria invade the small intestine and enter the bloodstream temporarily. The bacteria are carried by white blood cells in the liver, spleen, and bone marrow, where they multiply and reenter the bloodstream. People develop symptoms, including fever, at this point. Bacteria invade the gallbladder, biliary system, and the lymphatic tissue of the bowel. Here, they multiply in high numbers. The bacteria pass into the intestinal tract and can be identified in stool samples. If a test result isn't clear, blood or urine samples will be taken to make a diagnosis.

What are the signs and symptoms of typhoid fever and paratyphoid fever?

Typhoid fever and paratyphoid fever have similar symptoms?. People usually have a sustained fever (one that doesn’t come and go) that can be as high as 103–104° F (39–40° C).

Other symptoms of typhoid fever and paratyphoid fever include:

- Weakness
- Stomach pain
- Headache
- Diarrhea or constipation
- Cough
- Loss of appetite

Some people with typhoid fever or paratyphoid fever develop a rash of flat, rose-colored spots.

Home life after joint replacement or spine surgery:

Going for a joint replacement or spine surgery can change your life in many positive ways. Freedom from pain and improved mobility are two main advantages, and who wouldn’t want that?

If you’re planning for either of these surgeries, it is likely your recovery could take anywhere from a few weeks to a couple of months. Now, a joint replacement or a spine surgery is a big decision and you’re probably thinking about it quite a bit. But it’s also important to think about your comfort after you return home. Here are a few tips to help you prepare for your time spent healing:

- Clear your walking paths! You need enough room to navigate comfortably to all the areas in your home you frequently use. Pick up rugs, remove animal and baby toys, clothing, totes or any other items from the floors.
- Choose your best chairs. Have a firm, comfortable armchair with an ottoman or a recliner chair to rest in and get your legs up. Low furniture is difficult to move in and out of, so you may need to raise the seat height.
- Secure railings. If you have to take the stairs to get to your bedroom, bathroom or anywhere else in your home, make sure you have a good railing to use. Loose or incomplete rails will not provide the stability you need to navigate safely your stairs.
- Adjust your bed height. Have a bed that you can get into and out of that is not too high. If this is not an option, make sure you have a good footstool handy to use as a step to allow you to sit back in your bed when getting into it.
- Be careful with pets. Keep pets secured away from you when you are moving around your home. Pets can trip you when they are underfoot!
- Prepare the bathroom for your limited mobility. If you can, install a grab bar next to your toilet and in the shower to assist you with balance and rising from a seated position.

Since challenged mobility is a temporary limitation, you may opt to purchase a raised toilet seat with arm rests or a commode seat with multiple uses (like the 3-in-1 commode) in lieu of grab bar installation. A seat for the shower is also helpful and can be as simple as a plastic lawn chair or a specialized bathtub bench to slide into the shower in a seated position.

There are a lot of thoughts that cross your mind when you are going to go through surgery, but it’s also important to take some time to think about how you can best take care of yourself once you’re home. Pay attention to the little things that you usually overlook and make sure that the layout will give you the safest and most comfortable environment. But most importantly: make sure you can reach the jar of cookies in the kitchen! A little sweetness always makes things a little better.
