Common questions asked by diabetic patients:
1. Is rice bad in diabetes?
Ans: Only polished rice is bad for diabetes. Unpolished varieties like brown rice, Rajmudi rice, Kerala matta rice etc., contain same amount of carbohydrates as wheat!
2. Is Wheat good for controlling blood sugar levels?
Ans:
Both wheat and rice contain same amount of carbohydrates and same impact on blood sugar. Having a healthy mix of unpolished rice, whole wheat, unpolished barley, millets and other non-grain based foods is better.
3. Should diabetic patients avoid fruits?
Ans: Having fruits is a must in diabetes to provide body with essential vitamins to maintain health. While extremely sweet fruits like mango should be taken in strict moderation, fruits like sweet lime, pomegranate, papaya etc. help to maintain blood sugar levels.
4. Should we avoid sweet tasting vegetables like carrots, beetroots, sweet potatoes? Ans: Carrots and beetroot are non starchy vegetables and great for diabetes. Sweet potato despite of being starch has plenty of fiber which helps to maintain blood sugar levels.
