🔊 Jaw clicking? At Orchards Dental Care, we don’t ignore the signal. We decode it.
It may seem harmless — but your jaw could be trying to tell you something important.
At Orchards Dental Care, we often see patients who ignore jaw clicking because there’s no pain. However, this sound commonly points to an issue with the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) — the joint that helps you speak, chew, yawn, and smile comfortably.
⸻
🦷 Why does TMJ clicking happen?
✔️ Disc displacement
Inside your TMJ is a small cushion called the articular disc. If it slips out of position, the jaw has to “jump” over it — causing a click or pop.
✔️ Overworked jaw muscles
Teeth grinding, clenching, stress, excessive gum chewing, or prolonged mouth opening can strain jaw muscles and disturb joint movement.
✔️ Joint inflammation or degeneration
Conditions like arthritis or chronic inflammation can also affect smooth jaw motion.
⸻
⚠️ Should jaw clicking worry you?
Jaw clicking is often the earliest sign of TMJ disorder.
It may begin as “just a sound”, but it indicates that the jaw is not moving in its ideal position.
If left unchecked, it can progress to:
• Jaw, facial, or ear pain
• Difficulty opening or closing the mouth
• Jaw locking
• Frequent headaches or neck pain
• Problems eating or speaking
Early attention makes a big difference.

🔍 How we assess jaw clicking at Orchards Dental Care
At Orchards, we believe in diagnosis before treatment.
Our evaluation includes:
• Detailed discussion of habits like clenching, grinding, stress, posture
• Clinical examination of jaw movement, joint sounds, and muscle tenderness
• Bite analysis and tooth wear assessment
• Advanced imaging (X-ray or CBCT or MRI) when required
🛠️ How TMJ clicking is managed
Most cases can be treated conservatively and non-invasively, especially when detected early.
✔️ Lifestyle guidance (diet, posture, habit correction)
✔️ Stress and muscle relaxation strategies
✔️ Custom-made night guards or splints for clenching & grinding
✔️ TMJ orthotics for jaw stabilisation when indicated
Surgery is rarely the first option.
