A spinal emergency treated at the right time changed his outcome.

Mr. Mohammed Salem, 37, from Oman, had been dealing with chronic back, buttock and leg pain along with increasing difficulty performing daily tasks. When he started experiencing problems with passing urine and motion, his condition suggested Cauda Equina Syndrome, a condition requiring urgent treatment.

At Manipal Hospital Old Airport Road, he was treated by Dr. S. Vidyadhara, Chairman & HOD – Spine Surgery and Consultant – Robotic Spine Surgery. He was diagnosed with

severe lumbar spinal stenosis and underwent robotic circumferential decompression and fusion surgery.

He recovered fully and returned to normal activity within a few weeks following surgery. Timely diagnosis and advanced spine care helped restore function and prevent permanent disability.

India’s medical tourism narrative is evolving and it must move beyond cost.

In a recent leadership perspective, our Group COO, Manipal Hospitals -
Mr. Karthik Rajagopal highlighted how global patients today choose destinations based on credibility, governance, clinical outcomes, and continuity of care - not affordability alone.

As India’s role in global healthcare matures, the focus shifts to building structured international pathways, transparent systems, and outcome-driven models that earn long-term trust.

This is the direction in which global care is being redefined.

Chronic spine pain stopped her from living normally — until she found the right treatment.

Mrs. Doreen Bongoy, a 72-year-old from Cameroon, had been living with lower back pain that radiated to both legs, worsening over the years to the point where she could barely walk a few steps. Daily life became difficult, and she sought treatment after being referred to Manipal Hospital Old Airport Road.

Under the care of Dr. S. Vidyadhara, Chairman & HOD – Spine Surgery and Consultant – Robotic Spine Surgery, she was diagnosed with severe lumbar canal stenosis and degenerative scoliosis, confirmed through X-ray and MRI. Treatment was planned using advanced spine surgery techniques to relieve nerve compression and restore mobility.

Following surgery, her pain gradually reduced, and she regained the ability to walk and manage daily activities comfortably.

The right diagnosis and surgical expertise helped her reclaim her independence and quality of life.

A milestone day at Manipal Hospital Old Airport Road!

Dr. Sunil G Kini, HOD & Consultant - Orthopaedic & Robotic Joint Replacement Surgery, and his team successfully performed 3 joint replacements in a single day, utilizing 3 robotic systems.

Why use different robots? Because no two patients are the same. We believe in tailoring the technology to the individual, not the other way around:
1. MAKO: The exclusive choice for high-precision hip replacement using advanced 3D CT-based mapping.
2. CUVIS: Selected to perfectly accommodate a specialized, patient-requested ceramic-coated knee implant.
3. CORI: Utilized for seamless integration and consistency with a patient’s existing Smith & Nephew implant.

Experience the future of joint replacement at Manipal Hospital Old Airport Road!

Years after an accident, a hidden infection altered his life.

Mr. Jacques Henri Sylvio from Mauritius lived comfortably for years after recovering from a road accident in 2013. However, increasing pain and difficulty walking led to the discovery of a severe bone infection and a loosened implant in his hip. The complications left him in pain, wheelchair-bound, and with a limb length discrepancy.

At Manipal Hospital Old Airport Road, he was treated by Dr. Samarth Arya, Consultant – Orthopaedics Joint Replacement and Robotic Surgeon. With support from the infection control department, his treatment began with a two-stage approach. The infected implant was removed, followed by an extended course of antibiotics. Once the infection resolved, a complex hip reconstruction was performed with specialised implants.

Post-surgery tests confirmed a complete infection-free outcome, and his hip was successfully reconstructed. Expert planning and staged treatment helped him regain mobility and return to life with confidence.
