This idol represents Garuda, the celestial king of birds and foremost devotee of Lord Vishnu, carved in the characteristic Hoysala sculptural style known for its sharp detailing and lifelike anatomy.
Depicted in an anthropomorphic form with folded hands in Anjali mudra, Garuda reflects parā-bhakti — complete surrender and unwavering devotion to the Supreme.
The broad wings rising behind his shoulders, finely chiselled features, kirita crown, kundalas, sacred thread and layered jewellery typify Hoysala craftsmanship and signify his divine status and warrior strength.
Positioned on a lotus pedestal directly facing the sanctum and aligned with the Dhwajasthambha and Gopuram, the idol occupies its traditional place in Vaishnava temples, symbolising that a devotee reaches Vishnu only after honouring his greatest servant.
According to temple belief, offering pranama to Garuda grants protection from fear, poisons, evil forces and serpent afflictions, while blessing the devotee with courage, inner clarity and spiritual discipline.
