Centre for Human Genetics

Centre for Human Genetics The Centre for Human Genetics is a centre for advanced research, teaching and training in areas which lie at the interface of modern genetics and medicine.

Besides research and teaching, the Centre provides comprehensive clinical services, including genetic counselling for a range of genetic disorders and inborn errors of metabolism. The Centre has been conducting intensive short-term courses and training programmes in human disease genetics and molecular cytogenetics which have routinely attracted young scientists and clinicians from across the country. With generous assistance from the Government of Karnataka, the Centre provides free of cost diagnostic and genetics counselling services to BPL families. The Centre is located in a 20-acre institutional area within a Biotech Park being developed by the Government of Karnataka in Electronics City in south Bangalore. The Centre offers a two-year Master's degree programme in Human Disease Genetics under the aegis of Mysore University. The course consists of formal teaching, laboratory exercises and case studies. Its aim is to provide hands-on training in human genetics via a combination of cell and molecular biology, genetics and clinical biology, including the use of statistical techniques and a significant research component. This interdisciplinary course has been designed to bridge the gap between clinical and basic biology. Details regarding the application process are available on our official website.

The third Obaid Siddiqui Memorial lecture organized by our sister institute, Centre for Human Genetics, was delivered by Prof. Partha Majumder on August 22nd, 2019.
Titled "Our Footprints on the Sands of Time", the lecture traced the history of human evolution, from Homo erectus to modern humans, based on DNA evidence. In particular, he summarized his work on the genomic
landscape of the people of India.

In the words of Tejashwini, an IBAB MSc08 student,
"The theory of evolution has been a silent inspiration behind the majority of biological experiments. Listening about it from another perspective renewed the curiosity that I experienced as a school student. Moreover, the historical
view presented by Prof. Majumder made me realize that we truly stand on the shoulders of giants when it comes to science in general, and Indian science, in particular."
