Department of Dentistry at GMC Baramulla Saves Newborn with Cleft Lip and Palate Using Custom Feeding Plate

Baramulla, March 24: A one-day-old newborn admitted to the NICU at Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla was successfully treated with a custom-made feeding plate after facing severe difficulty in feeding due to a cleft lip and palate condition.
The infant had low oxygen saturation and was unable to suck milk properly, with frequent nasal regurgitation and choking episodes caused by the gap between the oral and nasal cavities. Recognizing the urgency, the Department of Dentistry intervened to fabricate a specialized feeding plate that would temporarily close the cleft and enable safe feeding.
The feeding appliance was meticulously designed and fabricated by prosthodontist Dr. Nazia Majeed Zargar, Associate Professor, with laboratory support provided by dental technicians Mr. Tawseef Ahmad Magray and Mr. Umer Majeed. The initiative was carried out under the leadership of the Head of the Department, Dr. Omer Hussain Misger.
Following placement of the feeding plate, the newborn showed immediate improvement. Feeding became effective, episodes of choking and nasal regurgitation were significantly reduced, and oxygen levels stabilized.
Department of Dentistry is highly thankful to Principal Prof Dr Majid Jahangir for his constant support.
