๐ Lens of the Eye
The lens is a transparent, biconvex structure located just behind the iris and pupil.
It plays a vital role in focusing light onto the retina to form clear images.
๐น Structure
Transparent & flexible: allows light to pass without obstruction.
Biconvex shape: curved on both sides, helping bend light rays.
Held by zonular fibers (suspensory ligaments) attached to the ciliary body.
๐น Functions
1. Accommodation โ The lens changes shape to focus:
Near objects โ lens becomes more rounded (increased curvature).
Distant objects โ lens flattens.
2. Focusing light precisely on the retina for clear vision.
3. Works with the cornea to refract light.
๐น Age-related Changes
With age, the lens becomes less flexible โ Presbyopia (difficulty focusing on near objects).
Can become cloudy โ Cataract (leading cause of reversible blindness).
โ
In short: The lens is like the natural camera lens of the eyeโadjusting focus to keep vision clear at different distances.
