Topic: Possibilities of Impurities in Poly Herbal Formulation*

A Journal Club session was organized at the Seminar Hall of Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine, Bhadrak (an NABH accredited and NABL Certified institute) on 27-02-2026 (Friday) to deliberate on the scientific and regulatory concerns related to impurities in poly-herbal formulations. The academic activity aimed to strengthen research quality, ensure pharmacovigilance, and promote standardization practices within Unani drug development.

The lecture was delivered by Dr. Aslam Siddiqui, Research Officer (Botany) S-II under the guidance of Dr. Kishore Kumar, Research Officer Inchage. The session witnessed the presence of all Technical Officers, who actively participated in the discussion, reflecting the institute’s commitment to continuous academic enrichment.

The presentation underscored the need for stringent quality control measures including pharmacognostical authentication, physicochemical analysis, microbial load testing, and modern analytical techniques to detect heavy metals, pesticide residues, and solvent traces.

The speaker also discussed regulatory perspectives and the relevance of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) in minimizing impurity risks. Particular attention was given to challenges unique to poly-herbal formulations, where multiple ingredients increase variability and potential interactions affecting purity and stability.

The session concluded with an interactive exchange of ideas, encouraging researchers to incorporate impurity profiling and standardization parameters in ongoing and future projects. The Journal Club proved to be a meaningful academic exercise that reinforced the institute’s emphasis on evidence-based practice, drug safety, and research excellence.
