Infantile onset diabetes mellitus (IODM) is a rare form of diabetes with onset at less than one year of age. ( Only 1 per 30 lakh children )

We have encountered such a case in last week.

Baby came in OPD having respiratory distress.
Parents were afraid of having corona.
Pattern of respiration created some doubt to do sugar. Sugar was 232 ( while he did not feed/took orally since 6-7 hrs. ) so immediately NG tube passed per urethra and urine sugar ketone bodies estimated. Both were +3 and large just as dipped in sample.

Baby immediately taken on diabetic ketoacidosis line ( as we all know it's an emergency ) and HBA1C was sent that came 12%.

In Next 24 hour baby's respiration , was normal now maintenance insulin therapy on subcutaneous line started and today baby was discharged with parents education and counselling about diabetes.

Main part of this case sharing is that, a lots of patients remains undiagnosed ( Missed diagnosis is common ,67% ) as classical symptoms of Diabetes ( polyphagia, polyuria, polydipsia ) are not present/ masked by baby's normal pattern & bahaviour and went unnoticed till their diagnosis or many babies expired as undiagnosed case.

So always be aware to do sugar in every resp. distress case as हर सांस की तकलीफ कोरोना नहीं होती।

ये लम्हा कुछ खास है,
बहन के हाथों में भाई का हाथ है,

ओ बहना, तेरे लिए मेरे पास कुछ खास है,
तेरे सुकून की खातिर मेरी बहना, तेरा भाई हमेशा तेरे साथ है....

10 साल की वंशिका अपने 7 दिन के भाई के राखी बांधकर रक्षा का वचन लेती हुई।

मालूम हो कि वंशिका की मां ने 7 माह में ही एक नवजात शिशु को जन्म दिया था जिसका वजन 980 ग्राम था एवं समय से पूर्व हो जाने एवं काफी कम वजन होने के कारण वंशिका के पापा ने बच्चे को स्पर्श हॉस्पिटल की नर्सरी में भर्ती कराया जहां पर ऐसे बच्चों का इलाज लगातार रूप से अच्छे तरीके से किया जा रहा है

आज रक्षाबंधन का त्यौहार होने की वजह से वंशिका एवं बच्चे के पापा ने डॉक्टर अतुल हेड़ा से संपर्क करके वंशिका द्वारा अपने भाई के राखी बांधने की इच्छा जाहिर की गई।

छोटी सी बच्ची वंशिका के अपने भाई के प्रति प्रेम को देखते हुए डॉक्टर अतुल हेडाअपने आप को ना रोक पाए और स्पर्श हॉस्पिटल में वंशिका द्वारा अपने भाई के राखी बांध कर रक्षाबंधन का त्योहार मनाया।
