How to be a lotus flower in the middle of a storm-tossed lake
Daily life brings chaos. Something happens, someone says something, and emotions start to boil inside us. Then, of course, guilt follows. But the truth is, even the most seasoned yogi sometimes grabs their head and swears like a sailor.
Events and people have a way of stinging us right where it hurts—or rather, where it used to hurt, but we chose to run away from that pain instead of facing it. We usually escape through endless scrolling or substances.
The first step, then, is to sit with these emotions. To let them flow. To name them and recognize that we are not our emotions. We need to understand that emotions are not enemies, but vital pieces of information. It sounds simple, yet it’s everything.
And then? Let them flow onward. Emotions, much like thoughts, have no real beginning or end; they come from nowhere and head toward the unknown. The better we become at recognizing and welcoming these emotions like old friends, the less the events around us—the things we often cannot influence or control—will be able to touch us. Or hurt us.
