In autism spectrum disorder (ASD), “fixations” typically refer to highly restricted, fixated interests that are abnormal in intensity or focus. This is one of the core diagnostic criteria in the DSM-5, described as strong attachments to unusual objects, preoccupations with specific topics, or excessively narrow (circumscribed or perseverative) interests.
These are often called special interests in the autistic community—a more positive, empowering term—or intense interests. The term “hyperfixation” is sometimes used interchangeably, but it more commonly describes shorter, all-consuming bursts of focus seen in ADHD (which often co-occurs with autism); special interests in autism tend to be longer-lasting and deeply tied to identity.
