Contraindications of Abhyanga (oil massage) in Ayurveda
1. Fever (Jwara)
* Oil massage can trap heat in the body, worsening the condition.
* Avoid Abhyanga until the fever subsides completely.
2. Acute Illness or Infections
* During colds, flu, or active infections, Abhyanga can disrupt the body’s natural healing process.
* Increases Kapha and Ama (toxins), potentially aggravating the condition.
3. Indigestion (Ajirna)
* When digestion is weak or food is not fully digested, massage can disturb the Agni (digestive fire).
* Wait until digestion normalizes.
4. Ama Accumulation (Toxin Build-Up)
* If there are signs of Ama (white coating on tongue, heaviness, sluggishness), Abhyanga can push toxins deeper into the tissues.
* First, clear Ama with proper detox (e.g., light diet, herbal decoctions).
5. Immediately After Meals
* Massage interferes with digestion. It should be done on an empty stomach or at least 2–3 hours after eating.
6. During Menstruation
* Traditionally avoided during the first 3 days of menstruation to not disrupt the natural downward flow (Apana Vata).
7. During Pregnancy
* In early stages, especially first trimester, full-body Abhyanga should be avoided unless prescribed by an Ayurvedic physician.
* Later in pregnancy, gentle massage may be allowed with specific oils and techniques.
8. Skin Conditions or Open Wounds
* Avoid Abhyanga on rashes, infections, burns, or wounds.
* Certain oils may aggravate sensitive or infected skin.
9. Extreme Weather Conditions
* Avoid in very hot, humid, or cold climates without proper temperature control.
* For instance, avoid Abhyanga in extreme summer unless using cooling oils.
10. Excess Kapha Conditions
* Conditions like heaviness, sluggishness, or excessive sleep may worsen with oil massage.
* Dry massage (Garshana) may be more appropriate.
11. Mental Health Disorders
* Severe psychological imbalances like acute psychosis or mania are contraindicated unless under medical supervision.
✅ Safe Practices
* Always choose the right oil for your dosha or body type (Vata, Pitta, Kapha).
* If unsure, consult an Ayurvedic practitioner, especially in cases of chronic disease or medication.
