Fortis Hospital Mohali has introduced robotic-arm assisted total hip replacement to its joint replacement programme. Dr Zubin Mehta, Consultant Orthopaedics & Joint Replacement, performed the first procedure on the Mako platform, enabling CT-based 3D planning and real-time haptic-guided precision during surgery.
Why it matters: Even minor deviations in implant positioning can impact mobility, stability, and long-term implant life. Robotic assistance enhances accuracy by translating pre-planned, patient-specific alignment into sub-millimetre ex*****on during surgery.
A CT scan first builds a 3D model of the patient’s hip, allowing exact pre-surgical planning of implant size and orientation. In theatre, the robotic arm guides ex*****on and prevents deviation beyond planned boundaries, keeping every move precise and controlled.
Dr Mehta brings advanced fellowship training from Canada and England, strengthening this precision-led approach. Robotic hip replacement is now available closer to home for patients across North India.
