Using Physiotherapy To Treat Shoulder Impingement Syndrome.
The shoulder is a ball and socket joint with a large range of motion. Shoulder impingement syndrome is a very common condition, resulting in pain in your shoulder when you move your arm above 90 degrees, which can interfere with many days to day tasks.
What Causes Shoulder Impingement?
Shoulder impingement syndrome can be triggered by a huge range of everyday activities, including lifting and painting, and sports such as swimming and tennis. All of these overhead activities require movement of the shoulder. Damage to the tendons of the rotator cuff muscles will cause this area to become irritated and inflamed and, if the impingement isn't treated correctly, these tendons may begin to develop small tears.
Anyone experiencing problems or pain within the shoulder should visit a Physiotherapist or their GP as soon as possible for an accurate diagnosis. Once a full assessment has been carried out and a diagnosis has been made, a musculoskeletal physiotherapist will be able to develop an effective treatment program that will promote healing and aid recovery.
Physiotherapy To Relieve Discomfort
People suffering from shoulder impingement syndrome will often have difficulty raising their arm out in front of them or out to the side due to pain and or weakness, which can result in difficulty performing simple tasks such as hanging the washing out, getting washed or dressed.
Patients will often be encouraged to ice the affected area and to avoid aggravating factors. Treatments such as massage and ultrasound may also be used. A variety of simple rehabilitative exercises will be prescribed that aim to improve the control around the shoulder, strengthening the rotator cuff muscles and reducing pain. The exercises will improve muscle strength, muscle balance, flexibility, and posture and should help to prevent ongoing problems.
