Somnus is the personification and god of sleep in Roman Mythology embodying the calm and stillness that descends upon the world at night. Often depicted as a gentle, winged figure, he drifts silently through the darkness, touching mortals and gods alike with his power to bring rest and dreams. From this quiet domain, he sends forth dreams, sometimes through his thousand sons, the Somnia, each capable of shaping visions that visit sleepers.
His Greek counterpart is Hypnos, and together they represent the essential balance between wakefulness and repose, serving as symbols of peace, rejuvenation, and the delicate boundary between the mortal world and the realm of dreams.
