With deep sorrow, the Murugappa Group announces the passing of Shri A Vellayan, our former Chairman.

For decades, he stood as a pillar of strength and guidance within the Murugappa Group. His steady leadership, quiet wisdom and deep sense of duty shaped much of the organisation’s journey, making it one of India's most respected conglomerates.

Magamai, or the art of giving, is at the heart of AMM Foundation’s philosophy. Over a century old, the Foundation makes a deep impact on the socio-economic conditions of many. It all started with Dewan Bahadur AM Murugappa’s philanthropic ideals. The ‘oru roobai’ hospital in Pallathur was the first step in that direction. Going from strength to strength, the Foundation’s beneficiaries cover farmers, ecosystems, budding athletes, children, the ailing, aspiring students and the aged. On his birth centenary in 2002, a statue of Mr AMM Murugappa Chettiar was unveiled at the Sir Ramaswamy Mudaliar Higher Secondary School in Chennai, an institution established by him in 1958.

The event was attended by former President of India Mr R Venkataraman, former Member of Parliament Mr Su Thirunavukkarasar, Mr MV Murugappan, former Chairman, CUMI, and other dignitaries.

More than a tribute in bronze, the statue stands as a symbol of his legacy as a pioneering industrialist, an institution-builder, and a philanthropist whose foresight helped lay the cornerstone of the Murugappa Group. His life continues to inspire generations to dream bigger and serve with purpose.
