Announcement time 🔈: in December 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) released guidelines on the management of chronic pain in children where they state that ACT ( Acceptance and Commitment Therapy ) is specifically recommended for use. ACT’s new status in the WHO guideline represents the culmination of two decades of research in this branch of clinical behavior analysis and psychotherapy and we at ProACT could not be happier! We started offering ACT services from 2018 and we’ve had the privilege of watching our young clients transform and thrive using this evidence based practice!

It can be difficult to watch your child go through feelings of sadness but attempting to fix those emotional moments by asking them to “stop crying” can do more harm than good. Children naturally turn to their parents for emotional support and validation, and by asking them to stop expressing their emotions, we might end up dismissing or minimizing their feelings. A more mindful approach to supporting their emotions would include:

💜 showing empathy in your response

💜 teaching them to accept feelings of sadness by naming the feeling

💜 Respecting boundaries by offering to help and not insisting on helping them

The way we speak to our kids has a huge impact on their growing minds 🧠, their identity and self esteem. Kids 👶 are like sponges, soaking up everything they hear and see, and very often repeating something that was said to them.

If you catch your kiddo speaking in a way you wouldn’t want them to, pause and examine your own speech 🗣around them.

✨Being conscious of what we say and how we put it, has a beautiful impact on them.

✨Mindful phrases not just help your child change subtle behaviors but also helps him use language thoughtfully, and improves his emotional well-being.

✨Next time you notice your conversation stepping away from a mindful space, pause, reflect and see if there a different way to approach the situation with your kiddo!

Mindfulness 🧘‍♀️ activity of the day!

Kids spend way too much time in the classroom or in seated structures! Step outside or take a stroll within your home/ classroom for a rainbow 🌈 walk! Spot something red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple as you walk together. Keep going through the colors in the order that you spot them through the walk!

Don’t forget to pause, take in the moment and capture a photograph 📸 of the everyday beauty that you and your child 👶 noticed together!
