Śarīra Saṁyama | Series – 1

“When the mind is involved in the practice, the practitioner becomes totally absorbed with the posture,” Śrī T Krishnamacharya.

Āsana serves as the foundational entry point to the Yoga journey. Within this discipline, breath plays a crucial and transformative role. By linking the mind and body, breath facilitates the cultivation of profound awareness and equilibrium.

In the words of Śrī TKV Desikachar, “Breath is the intelligence of the body.” It is the breath that acts as an intrinsic guide, directly reflecting one’s mental state and providing a pathway for deeper physical embodiment. Consequently, breath coordination is recognised as an indispensable element in every Āsana practice in the KYM tradition.

The KYM is honored to announce a specialised programme to deepen one’s comprehension of the intrinsic mind-body-breath relationship. This experience will demonstrate precisely how synchronised breathing can elevate both awareness and the functional efficacy of each posture. The programme begins with a concise yet comprehensive introduction to this triadic relationship, ensuring participants are equipped to seamlessly integrate this connection into their personal practice.

Participants will engage with breath-related techniques and intensifications, such as breath holds after inhalation and exhalation, sustained posture duration, and the integration of chanting, to directly observe the profound influence of breath upon both the physical posture and the mental state.

This programme will be anchored by Ms. Poornima Kavlekar, Yoga Therapist and Senior Teacher, KYM.

Video recordings will be made available for a limited period to all registered participants, the schedule of which will be shared.

Modern medical research is increasingly highlighting the gut-brain axis, the importance of the gut biome, the impact of unprocessed emotions on gut health and the combined implications of these on the autonomous nervous system.

It is this indeed of great significance that both Yoga and Āyurveda have stressed on the importance of Samāgni as an indicator of holistic wellness at all dimensions. Āyurveda interventions prioritize the stabilization and efficient functioning of the Jaṭharāgni. Yoga practices, be it Āsana, Prāṇāyāma, Bhāvana or Dhyānam also centre the Prāṇa–Apāna dialogue mediated by the Jaṭharāgni.

KYM is delighted to partner with I-AIM to bring to you a hybrid programme that commences with an online study of the gut-brain axis as seen through the lens of Yoga and Āyurveda, culminating in an in person retreat at I-AIM Bengaluru, in which participants experience the first hand the integration of Āyurvedic treatments and Yoga practices. Please note that the details of the in-person retreat will be shared separately and payment for the same will also have to be made separately.

We are happy to share an infographic report from the Yoga Cikitsā wing. Our initial study has established a clear connection between regular practice and improvement in sleep, energy, and appetite parameters, as well as reduced dependency on medications. Such results continue to offer validation of the authenticity and potential of the KYM approach to Yoga-Cikitsā, following the foundation laid for us by Śrī TKV Desikachar.

Sri T Krishnamacharya

If there is one name that can be considered pretty much synonymous with contemporary yoga, it is Sri T Krishnamacharya who is well known the world over as the yoga guru of legendary masters such as Indra Devi, BKS Iyengar, Pattabhi Jois and TKV Desikachar. Among most contemporary styles of yoga, several trace their roots back to this legend, whose teachings remain the inspiration for thousands of yoga practitioners around the world. Be it fitness, healing or a spiritual quest, T Krishnamacharya is among the few legendary yoga gurus who managed to give every seeker of yoga and yoga therapy exactly what they sought. With a proven ability to stop his heartbeat, being a teacher to none less than the King of Mysore, a ram-rod straight posture even as he neared a hundred years of age, a devoted bhakta who stood by his faith and yet encouraged others to seek and find their own anchor…in every way T Krishnamacharya was a remarkable man. He was an acclaimed master of asana, pranayama and dhyanam techniques, a seeker of knowledge, a prolific writer and orator, one of the pioneers of adapting yoga techniques for therapy, and an adept in Vedic chanting. The Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram was established in 1976, by T Krishnamacharya’s son and long-time student TKV Desikachar to carry forth the invaluable teachings of Sri T Krishnamacharya.
