The Department of Kaumarabhrithya, Government Ayurveda College, Thiruvananthapuram is conducting National Continuing Medical Education (CME) on “Keraleeya Balachikitsa - Kairali Baladarshanam - Kerala's Traditional Vision on Child Health” from 3rd to 7th November 2025.

This distinguished seminar series serves as a dynamic platform to explore and advance paediatric care in Ayurveda. It brings together leading experts, scholars, and clinicians to share knowledge, exchange experiences, and highlight innovations in Balachikitsa, while strengthening the enduring legacy of Ayurveda for the future of child health. This initiative is sponsored by the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, and the Government of Kerala.

On 4th Nov 2025, Prof. Dr. N.Shunmugom, Founder and Chief Vethasatthi Expert, Thirumoolar Vethasatthi Academy, Coimbatore, has been invited to give talk on the topic "Vethasatthi Maruthuvam (Marma Chikitsa) in Balachikitsa - Treatment for Behavioural and Emotional Challenges in Children”.

Puruva Varmam: Question and Answer (2)

On 6th Aug 2025, I had posted on Facebook about "Why Puruva Varmam induces sleep".

Many people posted comments with their doubts. Mrs. Chitra Suresh had a question: "Is there written evidence for all these Vethasatthi treatments, or are they an oral tradition?"

Vethasatthi Varmam/ Marma does not discuss of anything without written references. For every Vethi point, there are texts available with detailed references concerning the external and internal anatomy, as well as the physiology related to that point.

Any treatment performed without textual references will fail when questioned by scholars.

Our institutions does not present or speak of anything publicly without written evidence

At the appropriate time, all the references will be revealed.

Vethasatthi Marma Chikitsa Workshop as capstone event for Marmayanam 2024-25

Marmayanam 2024-25, an insight into the practice of Marma Shastra, is a one-year Certification Course conducted by Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda Foundation, Thrissur, Kerala.

Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda Foundation is a constituent of the Vaidyaratnam Group of Institutions, which were established in 1924. Vaidyaratnam Group is helmed by the Thaikkattu Mooss family, renowned for their traditional knowledge of the Ashtavaidya tradition of Ayurveda and its association with Kerala Ayurveda which dates back to 19th century. Moreover, Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda Foundation is central government recognized Centre of Excellence in Ayurvedic Management of Chronic Joint Disorders.

As Marmayanam 2024-25 is coming to an end, as a capstone finale event, Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda Foundation has requested Thirumoolar Vethasatthi Academy to conduct 3-day workshop on “Vethasatthi Maruthuvam (Marma Chikitsa) – Level One” on 12th, 13th and 14th September 2025.

Accepting their request, under the guidance of Dr. N.Shunmugom, Founder and Chief Vethasatthi Expert, Thirumoolar Vethasatthi Academy, the 3-days workshop was conducted successfully and 52 Ayurveda doctors participated and benefitted through this workshop.

Puruva Varmam: Question and Answer (1)

On August 6, 2025, I posted on Facebook about why Puruva Varmam induces sleep. Many people raised questions about it.

First, an answer to the question from Mrs. Revathi Nageswaran.

The Koorman Vayu is not what causes sleep.

According to our Tamil texts, the Dhananjayan Vayu is said to induce sleep.

The texts also say that the Udana Vayu plays a dual role - helping both in falling asleep and in waking up.

Therefore, in our Gurukulam (traditional school), we activate this specific Vayu to induce sleep. This method has been applied to many people with consistent success.

Our approach is based on the knowledge from our texts and our Gurukulam's experience, though the scientific explanation still needs deeper exploration.

It is also true that the Kondai Kolli (a point on the crown of head) can induce sleep. This is because it is a junction point for the Ida and Pingala Nadis, and also it is where the Udana Vayu and Dhananjayan Vayu are located. For this reason, stimulating Kondai Kolli can induce sleep in some individuals.

Our Vethasatthi texts and Gurukulas that follows them use these points to create a sense of sleepiness, and we follow the same practice.

Please be aware that there are many other points on our body that can also promote sleep.

Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda Foundation Hospital, which is a Centre of Excellence in Ayurvedic Management of Chronic Joint Disorders, located at Thrissur, Kerala has invited Thirumoolar Vethasatthi Academy to conduct workshop for Ayurvedic doctors as part of their Marmayanam 204-25 course.

Based on their invitation, Thirumoolar Vethasatthi Academy has accepted to conduct 3-days workshop on "Vethasatthi Maruthuvam - Level One" (Vethasatthi Marmachikitsa) on 12th, 13th and 14th September 2025 at Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda Foundation Hospital.

Why does the Puruva Varmam (energy point) induce sleep?

In Vethasatthi Maruthuvam (medicine), the treatment involving the vethi points (energy points) holds great significance. These vethi points are known in different terms such as varmam (marma), kaalam, surukki, etc.

When vethi points are properly stimulated through specific techniques (Kaibagam Seibagam), it helps in relieving various physical and mental ailments.

Such treatment methods have been recorded in written form by our ancestors. Alongside Gurukula training, proper textual training is also essential for treatment. A system of medicine without the support of classical texts cannot sustain in the future. If Vethasatthi Maruthuvam (medicine) is still thriving today, the textual evidences are the primary reason behind its continued existence.

Touching and activating the Puruva Varmam (energy point located in the supraorbital notch) in the correct manner is believed to strengthen vision. However, no existing published varmam literature clearly provides a reference supporting this claim.

So, where did we obtain the evidence for this? It has been derived from several rare ancient unpublished texts. Before the year 2003, when no one spoke of this therapy, we revealed and published authentic scriptural proofs.

The scriptures says that:
“கண்புருவம் நடுவே உள்ளில்
தலையோட்டில் குழிவிடத்தில்
சக்ஷு என்னும் சத்திநாளம்“
“Between the eyebrows, inside the skull on the foramen, lies the Sakshu energy channel (Shakti Naalam)”

As the text indicates, this Shakti Naalam (energy channel) is what gives power to the field of vision.

To induce sleep, however, a different method of activation must be used at the same Puruva Varmam.

One text mention that both the Ida and Pingala Nadis meet at the Puruva Varmam. Another text explains that slightly separating the Ida and Pingala Nadis induces sleep. Based on such textual references, the Vethasatthi method of treatment is practiced. This is the reason why people have been seeking this therapy continuously from 1990 to 2025, for over 35 years.

It can be confidently stated that, Vethasatthi Maruthuvam (medicine), when practiced based on textual evidences along with Gurukula training, causes no side effects or adverse reactions.
