A 50 woman in her 50s was admitted in our hospital with a fracture in her hip while walking. Normally fractures shouldn't come with such trivial walking. When investigated we found that the patient had cancer in her bones. on further investigation, we found that the patient had large fungating cancer in her breast which had spread to her bones. We told her that she had breast cancer. She told that she knew it, although the family was shocked. But decided that she wouldn't tell anyone as she knew she would die and had not taken treatment.
When detected early, survival with breast cancer is very good. Studies have shown that at 5 years from the detection of breast cancer, in women who had breast cancer restricted only in the breast, they have very high survival rates of 99%. If only she had gone to a hospital when the tumour was only in her breast, she would have mostly been cured. Many people think that if they have a cancer, they would definitely die. Its not so. Treatment has changed. It is recommended that women above 40 years screen themselves with a mammogram and ultrasound every year for better detection and survival. If only she had known that breast cancer could be cured, she could have been saved. Please spread this message so that many more could be cured.
