Nankem Hospital is conducting a Varicose Vein Medical Camp with visiting specialist, Dr. Roy Verghese, M.S.,FSVS (USA) from Daya Speciality Surgical Centre, Thrissur.

Dr. Roy Verghese is an eminent vascular surgeon who is highly skilled in the treatment of varicose veins, DVT, peripheral vascular disease, AV malformation, recanalization, stenting, embolization and all vascular IR procedures.

Patients can avail of free consultation and doppler scan, and surgery or LASER treatment, if required, will be done at subsidised rates.

Today, the last day in February, is Rare Disease Day, which is observed to raise awareness for rare diseases, and to work towards equity in healthcare, and access to diagnosis and therapies for people living with a rare disease.

A rare disease is any disease that affects a small percentage of the population.
Most rare diseases are genetic and are thus present throughout a person's life, even if symptoms do not immediately appear.

Here are some facts:
• 5% of the worldwide population is affected with a rare disease
• There are over 6000 listed rare diseases
• Nearly 70 million people in India are affected by a rare disease
• 70% of rare diseases have an identifiable genetic origin
Many rare diseases appear early in life, and about 30% of children with rare diseases die before the age of 5
• It takes an average of 7 years for a person with a rare disease to be diagnosed
