What is the cause of death?

Ignorance is the cause of death and knowledge is the cause of liberation. When our old clothes become useless, we need new ones. The body is the garment of the soul. Death is to change the body garments from an old dress to a new one. The real cause of death is our own evolution or Self-evolution. The soul keeps traveling until it reaches a state of total completeness, the experience of the Absolute. Life is a journey. If you saw life as a mass of energy, you would not state that energy can ever be destroyed, it will go on existing in one form or the other; therefore life cannot undergo destruction or complete annihilation.

*How to use our memory*

Memory can be either harmful or useful; it can be the cause of our bo***ge or it can make us free. Memory is the cause of bo***ge when we become attached to both our good and bad experiences. Nevertheless, memory can liberate us from good and bad experiences, if we remember God, and we remain God conscious, our experiences will not make us happy or unhappy; instead they will give us a blissful state.

Modern people are so stressed that they do not know how to enjoy life. When people go to work, they think of the weekend when they will be able to relax. So they wind up working hard for five days while thinking of these two days. When the weekend finally comes, there is so little happiness, and sadness soon sets in when the weekend is over. People go through five days of stress and unhappiness with the expectation of two days of happiness, which are often spent sleeping or watching the television. People work all year and look forward to a few weeks' holiday. A whole year of stress for a few weeks of pleasure! A whole life of unhappiness while waiting to get a pension, with the hope that life will be better during the retirement stage. Is this all there is to life?

When we do not spend this moment in joy and happiness, it will be wasted. If I am sick for five days, how can I expect to be happy for the next two days? Yoga teaches us to be satisfied with what we have and how to be happy in each moment. With spiritual things you should never be satisfied, but with material things, you should curb your desires and exercise self-control.

Do not think that the first five limbs ( of Astanga Yoga; namely Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama and Pratyahara ) being outer or external , have less significance or priority. On the contrary, they help or qualify one to enter into the subtle realm. Through Yama and other four external limbs, you have to surrender to the Lord externally. Through the last three( Dharana , Dhyana and Samadhi ) you have to surrender internally. The real foundation is love and surrender. Cultivate it faithfully and sincerely.

*Purifying Memory*

Memory is an inner instrument ( antah-karana). It is the source of the flow of thoughts. All human experiences in day-to-day life are stored in this inner storehouse. The periphery of memory increases every day. Negative impressions that arise from daily living as well as from the past activities influences daily life.

When a sincere seeker tries to follow a disciplined life, he begins to filter the thinking process. When negative and destructive thoughts are avoided or not entertained, they become weak and inactive.

When a sincere seeker practices ishwar pranidhana (surrender to God), then slowly these memories of mundane experiences get purified and the real memory of one's true nature is reflected. Then the seeker reaches the next stage.

As you think,so you become. As is your outlook, so is your life. If you look at me, then my spiritual energy will enter through your eyes and go straight inside your brain. God has given you eyes only to perceive the Self. If you remain in bad company, you will become bad. Whenever you are in good company, keep your eyes open, so your body and your life will be purified. First you should seek asana, not as in a posture, but as sitting in the soul. You should go into it deeply, since your light, your soul, the power of God, the formless, remains here in the fontanel. He is talking, seeing and hearing. If the formless did not inhale, then your physical form would not remain in the world. So you are meditating with form and formless together. Without breath and without the soul, you will have no activity in life.

Sometimes when I ask people, " How are you?" they reply "Not good ". "What happened?" I ask. "One of my family members died" or " My health is not good" or " I got a letter from my employer. I have only two weeks left on my job."

Now, let us think, is this the first time a family member has died? Has not your grandfather and great grandfather died?..
Death is not a new thing. Disease is not a new thing. Wrinkles on your face is not a new thing either, and neither is losing your job. So why are we sad about these things? It is because we do not understand what 'good' really is. Real good is remaining in the presence of God within. There is really no difference between God and good.

Even in outside world, the wind blows, the sun rises, clouds drift by, and the seasons come and go in their own time, following a particular pattern. All of nature is regulated by the presence of the Divine, and nature works within your body in the presence of the soul. You should not be too concerned or worried about what is going on. Do not be identified with your body. If your body is weak, do not think that " I am weak ." Your body may be tall or small, but you are not tall and you are not small. Always maintaining this type of attitude will bring you contentment, and free you from many worries in life. This is a spiritual attitude or inner contentment.

There is a story in the Mahabharata about a beautiful palace constructed by Yudhishthira which was made of crystal and stones. It was an enchanting palace with many illusions and hidden doors and had the appearance of water where there was none, while there was water in areas that looked dry. Duryodhana, the eldest Kaurava, visited the palace and was fooled by the appearance of water where there was none. He walked carefully; lifting up his clothes, and was later ashamed of having been taken in by the illusion. In another area, which he thought was dry, he walked normally and suddenly slipped and fell. Draupadi, the wife of the Pandavas, spoke and ridiculed him. "O son of the blind king, you are also behaving as if you were blind." The statement was literally true. Duryodhana's father was indeed blind, and his son did behave as if he were blind. However, the tone in which Draupadi said this, as well as the intention of her statement, not only was hurtful, but even became one of the causes of a war. No truth should be spoken so as to inflict pain. Truth and nonviolence are closely associated. If you know that the truth will hurt someone, then it is not a truth that should be spoken. Always be truthful in thought, word and deed. Yet, remember that being truthful is not always easy.

The philosophy of Kriya Yoga is very simple to follow. Human beings perform actions ceaselessly from birth until death. Neither the body not the soul can function alone. Neither the bulb nor electricity alone can give us light. Just as the union of the bulb and the electricity gives us light, so the body and the soul joined in the state of yogastha perform every action. So the real doer is the soul, and the body is the instrument. This is a practical technique. In all our actions, we should perceive the soul, but due to ignorance, the jiva thinks it is the one who performs all actions. This is nothing but ego, aham karta iti bhavah, and this binds the jiva, so it must take birth again and again in order to reap what it has sown, and experience the results of past actions. However, if the soul is perceived in all actions, then the soul and not the jiva, enjoys the fruit of past actions.
