Proper digestion is one of the fundamental factors of Ayurveda. 🔥
•What is a Matravat? The literal meaning is "desired quantity". The amount of food desired (needed) by the body, age, agni, type of food to be ingested, and not based on "xyz" calories/units of specific food constituents.
•Matra can be classified as the quantity of a single food or the quantity of all the items in a meal. The quantity of an individual food item differs with its properties and prakriti of the individual; but yes Ayurveda specifies matra in a particular meal.
•Ayurveda explains, one should not eat until satisfaction (stomach is full), for example, if you roughly divide the stomach into three parts
•1 portion must be for solid foods like roti, rice, bread, vegetables/ meat.
etc.
•1 part for liquids which can include dals, milk, soups and water etc,
•The last part should be left free movement of the doshas
•This facilitates proper shaking of food and aids in digestion.
•How do we decide the matra for ourselves?
Ayurveda emphasizes a simple golden rule 💎
👉🏻Eat only when you're hungry and not just because it's been 2-3 hours since your last meal. Feeling hungry is a sign that indicates that "the previous meal has been completely digested and the body is ready to digest the new food". Sometimes you may not feel hungry for 4-5 hours right away, or feel hungry within 2 hours.
This floatation occurs in relation to:
•In the first case - either the amount of food may seem small but heavy to digest (such as nuts or fatty foods) or the digestive fire (agni) has weakened.
•In the latter case; the amount of food may be right or less, but it may be easy to digest (rice, raisins, soups, etc) or the digestive fire is well lit depending on the daily routine and weather.
