We're one week in and still pinching ourselves. Latika children and trainees walked into the new building for the first time — a 56,000 sq ft campus built entirely for them.

Big smiles, backpacks, and wheelchairs. Monday was an open day for families. Tuesday, regular attendance began. When you design for the most vulnerable, it works better for everyone. The ramp that brings in a wheelchair user also brings in a grandmother, a delivery person, a tired parent with a stroller.

After three years of construction and decades of dreaming, welcome! Everyone's welcome. :)

10 March was Handover Day at Latika’s new Center of & Influence in . This day marked the moment when our donors, friends and supporters handed the building to the Latika team — over 130 staff members. It was a preview of the building and a handover, not the inauguration.

As Stewart Brand writes, “You don’t finish a building. You start one.” This day marked that start.

is communication too! Children don’t have to fit into one way of speaking. They can express in ways that work for them. Raghav Anand, 10, Latika School, takes the mic and makes sounds that don’t follow words. The band listens and follows :)

Latika runs pick-and-drop for our kids across Dehradun in buses and vans. People adjust in shared transport—space is tight, and safety and comfort are often an afterthought for people and for everyone else. But we don’t have to be like that, right?

Jagdish bhaiyya opens the van door. “Amogh yahin baithta hai.” He helps Amogh, 16, Latika Training, settle into his spot, adjusts his bag and waits till he is comfortable. Our driver bhaiyyas and support staff know every child by their needs— where they sit, what helps them. It's nothing extra, promise!

As we get closer to moving to our new premises, our kids are finding their way onto the walls. We’ve been collecting art for a long time, some made here and some donated by friends. It's almost time to hang them all!

Frolicking with friends!
Kids from Nanhe had a lovely time with friends at Mount Fort Academy. Here's Rudra, right in the middle of it. :)

“Woh wali didi kahaan hain?” asked Aastha Sharma, 19, while looking for our CA Aayushi. Aayushi was on leave that day. But Aastha had brought her a card on Valentine's Day. So we took the card. And pinned it on the softboard. Along with all the other cards our trainees had made for bhaiyyas and didis!

Every month sees a happy tradition of Birthday Celebration Day at Latika. When the cake arrives, the mood shifts instantly. Faces light up. Kids clap their hearts out, joyful, a little wild. Soooo much happiness in watching friends being celebrated. Pooja Panwar, Project Head at Nanhe, remembers a mother asking years ago, “Didi, mere bacche ka bhi birthday hai. Uska bhi manega?” Of course it did! And when she picked her child up, her eyes said everything.
