Today ( last wed of Feb ) is world Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy day . It is under diagnosed and not thought about by many clinicians . It can lead to chest discomfort, shortness of breath , syncope , heart failure and even sudden death .
An early recognition is important and ECG is most often abnormal . Echocardiography which is widely available is diagnostic . MRI also is diagnostic.

Many drugs and procedures like surgery abd non surgical alcohol injection in the septal arteries can be very useful . A new drug which acts at the basic pathology of hyper active actin myosin binding - mavacamten and aficamten have been breakthroughs in the management .

It was an honour for the members of the Gauri Kaul Foundation to meet the current Chairman and Managing Director of the Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOCL), Mr Arvinder Singh Sahney and his team in Srinagar at the Zeewan Depot on the out skirts of Srinagar.

The highlight was a health camp carried out through the services of the IOCL-Heart Clinic on Wheels, a moble clinic funded by IOCL in April 2025. This clinic is involved in 2 important programs, (a) screening the school children for rheumatic, congenital heart disease and child hood obesity (b) To find the gaps in the treatment being given in the community health centres (Ayushman Arogya Mandir's).

An interim report of these activities of the Gauri Kaul Foundation was handed over to the CMD who appreciated the work being done.

Prof Upendra Kaul (DMC No.: 2267) is currently Chairman Batra Heart Centre and Dean Academics and Research of BHMRC, New Delhi. He is a highly recognized name both nationally and internationally for his work in cardiovascular sciences. He is known as a passionate teacher and an astute clinician who is credited with starting the coronary angioplasty program in India and continues to bring innovative techniques in interventional cardiology to the country. He was also on the faculty of G B Pant Hospital, PGIMER Chandigarh and AIIMS where he was a Professor of cardiology. He has been involved in several public education programs all over the country including in his place of birth in Kashmir.
