🧠 Understanding Craniotomy vs Craniectomy

Craniotomy is a surgical procedure in which a small portion of the skull is temporarily removed to access the brain and then placed back after the surgery.

Dr. Anurag Saxena, Cluster Head – Delhi/NCR, Department of Neurosurgery & Consultant Spine Surgeon at Manipal Hospitals Dwarka, New Delhi, explains that this procedure is commonly performed to treat conditions such as brain tumors, aneurysms, removal of blood clots, or to relieve increased pressure inside the brain.

In certain situations, when the bone is not immediately replaced to help reduce pressure, the procedure is known as a craniectomy.

Understanding these terms helps patients and families feel more informed and confident about neurosurgical treatments. Timely diagnosis and expert care are key to better outcomes.
