بدأت قصة أنجح عالم أرز في الهند على طريق ترابي في منطقة غازيبور بولاية أوتار براديش. ففي كل صباح خلال السبعينيات، كان صبي صغير يدعى أشوك كومار سينغ ينطلق في رحلة مدتها خمسة وعشرون كيلومتراً على دراجته الهوائية للوصول إلى مدرسته. وقبل أن يبدأ تلك الرحلة الطويلة، كان يومه مليئاً بالعمل اليدوي الشاق، حيث يقضي ساعاته الأولى في حرث التربة، وحلب الجاموس، وتنظيف حظائر الحيوانات في مزرعة عائلته.

هناك ذكرى معينة من تلك السنوات ظلت محفورة في ذهنه للأبد، فقد راقب جيرانه وهم يغسلون حبوب القمح بعناية من روث الحيوانات ليسدوا رمقهم ببضع قطع من الخبز، وذلك تحت وطأة الجوع الشديد. ترك مشهد الفقر المدقع هذا علامة لا تمحى في نفسه، وفي تلك اللحظة قرر أنه لن يكون مجرد مزارع عادي، بل أراد أن يصبح عالماً يغير الطريقة التي تطعم بها الهند شعبها.

وبينما كان العديد من أقرانه يبحثون عن وظائف مربحة في بلدان أخرى بعد إنهاء دراستهم، اختار أشوك البقاء في وطنه. انضم إلى المعهد الهندي للبحوث الزراعية وكرس حياته لحبة أرز واحدة. يتذكره زملاؤه كرجل عاش بين السكن الجامعي والمختبر، ونادراً ما كان يشارك في المناسبات الاجتماعية لأنه كان مشغولاً للغاية بالاستماع إلى ما كانت نباتاته تحاول قوله، فقد كان يؤمن أنه إذا راقب العالم المحاصيل عن كثب، فإنها ستهمس له بأسرارها.

وعبر سنوات من الصبر، بدأ يتقن فن تربية النباتات. كان يبحث عن نوع معين من السحر؛ أراد أرزاً يتمتع برائحة مثالية، وحبات تتمدد إلى ضعف حجمها عند الطهي، ونباتات يمكنها الصمود أمام الطقس القاسي والآفات. أدى عمله في النهاية إلى ابتكار أصناف مثل "بوسا باسمتي 1121"، التي غيرت وجه الزراعة الهندية تماماً.

كان تأثير علمه هائلاً، فما بدأ كحلم صبي على دراجة هوائية تحول في النهاية إلى إمبراطورية تصدير بقيمة ستة مليارات دولار للهند. واليوم تغطي أصناف الأرز التي طورها ملايين الهكتارات في جميع أنحاء البلاد. وبفضل عمله، أصبحت الهند رائدة عالمياً في صادرات أرز البسمتي، مما جلب مليارات الدولارات من العملات الأجنبية إلى الأمة.

The story of India’s most successful rice scientist began on a dusty road in the Ghazipur district of Uttar Pradesh. Every morning during the 1970s, a young boy named Ashok Kumar Singh would set out on a twenty-five kilometer bicycle journey to reach his school. Before he even started that long ride, his day was already full of hard manual labor. He spent his early hours tilling the soil, milking buffaloes, and cleaning out animal sheds on his family's farm.

One particular memory from those years stayed with him forever. He watched as neighbors, driven by extreme hunger, would carefully wash wheat grains out of animal dung just to make a few pieces of bread. This sight of deep poverty left a permanent mark on his mind. It was at that moment he decided he would not just be another farmer. He wanted to become a scientist who could change how India fed its people.

While many of his peers looked for lucrative jobs in other countries after finishing their studies, Ashok chose to stay home. He joined the Indian Agricultural Research Institute and dedicated his life to a single grain of rice. His colleagues remember him as a man who lived between the hostel and the lab, rarely joining social events because he was too busy listening to what his plants had to say. He believed that if a scientist watched closely enough, the crops would whisper their secrets.

Through years of patience, he began to master the art of breeding. He was looking for a very specific type of magic. He wanted a rice that had a perfect aroma, grains that would stretch to twice their size when cooked, and plants that could survive harsh weather and pests. His work eventually led to the creation of varieties like Pusa Basmati 1121, which changed the landscape of Indian agriculture.

The impact of his science was massive. What started as a boy’s dream on a bicycle eventually turned into a six billion dollar export empire for India. Today, his rice varieties cover millions of hectares across the country. Because of his work, India became a global leader in Basmati exports, bringing billions of dollars in foreign exchange back to the nation.

However, if you ask Dr. Singh about his success, he does not talk about the money. He talks about the farmers. He finds his greatest reward in the stories of families who now live in sturdy houses and send their children to the best schools. The man who once watched people struggle for a single meal had successfully created a legacy where millions could live with dignity. Recently, the Government of India recognized this journey by awarding him the Padma Shri.
