We all come across headaches at any part of our lives. Headaches can be primary or secondary. Primary headaches are those in which headache is the only symptom while secondary headache is due to some underlying disease in the brain.
Migraine is a primary headache. It is caused by change in level of chemical (serotonin) in the brain. Typical migraine headache are episodic, unilateral and throbbing in character. There are number of factor that act as a trigger for onset of migraine.
Migraine affects quality of life severely. It is more common in females than in males. The triggers which causes migraine are hormonal changes in females, stress, lack of sleep, hungry or empty stomach, intake of alcohol, bright light and excessive noise. These headaches may last for 4-72 hours and patient with migraine want to be alone and in dark place.
If migraine occurs more frequently and last unusually long then patient should consult a doctor.
It can be prevented by observing trigger factors and avoiding them.
