Press Talk by District Veterinary Officer – ASF Update 🐷🚫

The DVO informed the public about the rising African Swine Fever cases and the urgent steps taken by the district administration.
Pork sale, movement, and slaughter have been temporarily restricted to stop the virus from spreading among pigs.
As part of the containment strategy, the Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department has completed scientific culling and safe disposal of affected pigs in designated zones. This action is being carried out strictly as per Government of India’s prevention protocol, ensuring maximum biosecurity and farmer compensation support.

Restriction on Inter-District Movement of Live Pigs in Assam

Due to the rising cases of African Swine Fever (ASF) in different parts of the state, the Government of Assam has imposed strict restrictions on the inter-district movement of live pigs and sale of pork. This step has been taken to prevent further spread of the disease and to safeguard the pig population as well as the livelihoods of farmers.

At State Veterinary Dispensary, Akajan, we are continuously monitoring the situation and assisting farmers with proper guidance, early detection, and preventive measures.

🐐 Why Dystokia Happens in Goats?

Common reasons include:

Kid too large to pass

Wrong position (head back, legs back, breech)

Twin or triplet entanglement

Narrow birth canal

Weak uterine contractions

🩺 How We Confirm That Natural Delivery Is Not Possible

A vet decides to intervene when:

Doe is straining for 30–40 minutes with no progress

Only one leg or head appears

No dilation of the cervix

Kid is in abnormal position

Kid is stuck even after gentle traction

Doe becomes weak, exhausted, or in pain

When these signs appear, manual correction or assisted delivery is required to save the doe and kid.

🐄💉 Today, SVD Akajan organized a Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) Vaccination Drive at Chimenmukh and No. 2 Chimenmukh areas. The vaccination program aimed to protect local livestock from FMD and promote better animal health management in the region.

The vaccination was successfully carried out by Para-vet Bikash Pegu and Avinash Pegu, who actively participated in administering vaccines and ensuring proper handling of the animals. Local farmers and livestock owners cooperated well, contributing to the smooth ex*****on of the drive.

The initiative reflects the ongoing efforts of SVD Akajan to enhance animal health and support sustainable livestock practices in rural communities.

Due to the presence of African Swine Fever (ASF) in our area, we are taking urgent action to protect our pigs and farmers. Please read and share the following information:

1. What is ASF?

ASF (African Swine Fever) is a highly contagious and deadly virus that affects pigs.

It does not affect humans, but it spreads quickly among pigs and can destroy entire herds.

2. Why are we culling pigs?

There is no vaccine or cure for ASF.

Culling infected and exposed pigs helps stop the virus from spreading to other farms.

This step protects healthy pigs and the entire pig farming community.

3. Government Compensation

Farmers whose pigs are culled will receive compensation from the government.

This support helps farmers recover from losses and encourages honest disease reporting.

It shows the government’s commitment to good governance and farmer welfare.

4. What happens next?

The affected areas will be disinfected and quarantined.

Restocking of pigs will be allowed only after veterinary clearance to ensure safety.
