Evidance based practice..
Practice guideline based on current valid research evidance. To discuss it let me start from what is evidance? Evidance is a truth found by scientific research. There is always supporting and negating evidences for a given statement in research. Therefore the person/student/researcher/clinician looking for evidence will find both types of evidences in literature. What is a good evidence and what is a poor evidence therefore? To understand what is a good evidence and what is a poor evidence, one have to understand the merits of research. That is a huge topic and a research should be roughly judged on 35 to 40 points on its different sections. That will be discussed on a different post.
Now evidence selected from quality research with good reliability and validity (two pillars of research, will be discussed on upcoming posts) gives us a protocol or framework. Research is not everybodys cup of tea. Therefore researchers research and collect the pearl from ocean. The clinicians and students are advised to follow them.
The analogy, i give to explain evidence among vast body of literature is there is a river which have high currents and slippery bed with rocks at bottom. The safe prooven passage within that river cordoned by two chains to walk and cross the river are the evidences, protocols for a given clinical scenario. If the student/clinician walk within the passage there is less chance of accident and its easy to cross the river.
But it essntially means that the water and river (knowledge) passing out of the passage is not known to the person.
Therefore knowledge is much vast than evidance. Evidance is good for a prooven outcome, but generating evidance requires exploration.
Its always first the thought, follwed by observation or vice versa, then reasoning, then experimentation and then comes the evidence. So evidence is good but its not everything. There are much more beyond current existing evidance, where evidance is yet to come.
Remember gravity was existing before Sir Isac Newton scientifically proved it and created evidence for it's existance!!
