March is Endometriosis Awareness Month
Endometriosis is a medical condition where tissue similar to the lining inside the uterus (the endometrium) begins to grow outside of the uterus. This growth typically happens on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and the tissue lining the pelvis, but it can occur in other parts of the body as well.
Common symptoms of endometriosis include:
Pelvic pain
Heavy menstrual bleeding
Painful bowel movements or urination especially during menstruation.
Infertility: It’s estimated that about 30-50% of women with endometriosis may experience infertility.
The exact cause of endometriosis is still not fully understood, but potential factors may include genetics, immune system disorders, or retrograde menstruation, where menstrual blood flows backward into the pelvic cavity.
Endometriosis can be managed through pain relief medications, hormonal therapies, and in some cases, surgery.
