Why is Durva Grass Essential in Puja?
Durva grass is indispensable for almost every auspicious ceremony or puja. Have you ever wondered why? Let me share the story behind it today.
The Story of Durvasur
There once lived an Asura (demon) named Durvasur. Despite being born an Asura, he was a devoted follower of Lord Krishna. However, his mother held a deep hatred for Krishna. Since Durvasur's father and brothers had been killed by the Devas (gods), his mother constantly desired the destruction of heaven and the death of the gods.
One day, she commanded him: "Go and perform penance to the Tridev (Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva). Obtain the boon of immortality, conquer the three worlds, and make me the Queen Mother of the universe. This is my command to you."
The Severe Penance
Obeying his mother, Durvasur went to a secluded place and began a rigorous penance. He meditated for thousands of years. His body decayed; his flesh was eaten by ants and insects, and even his bones began to crumble into the earth. Yet, the names of the Tridev continued to resonate from that spot. The gods grew fearful and tried various tactics to break his meditation, but they failed.
The Divine Boon
Finally, the Tridev appeared. Lord Brahma sprinkled water from his Kamandalu (sacred pot), restoring Durvasur’s body to its original form. They asked him to seek a boon.
Durvasur replied, "Lord, I performed this penance to obey my mother. She asked me to seek immortality. But I know that if I become immortal, she will force me to commit evil acts. Therefore, O Lords, grant me a boon where I can be immortal and serve you, ensuring I never cause harm to anyone in this world."
The Transformation
Pleased with his devotion and wisdom, the Tridev said, "O Durvasur! Not just the Tridev, but you shall serve every god and goddess in the universe. We grant you this blessing."
When Durvasur asked how he would serve everyone, the Tridev explained:
"You shall be transformed into Durva grass. You will be essential in the worship of all deities. On this day of Akshaya Tritiya, we grant you this eternal boon. While everything else in the world may perish, you, in the form of Durva grass, shall never die. You will remain immortal on this earth."
The Significance of Three Leaves
In rituals, three blades of Durva grass are typically used. It is believed that Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva reside in these three blades. Since no auspicious work in this world is possible without the Tridev, the Lord declared: "From this day forward, no auspicious task or blessing shall be complete without Durva." #মা #সারদা #রামকৃষ্ণ
