Digital Acceleration in South Africa’s Health Supply Chain

Did you know that South Africa is setting a powerful example in health system transformation?

The government’s digital transformation roadmap is pushing for stronger collaboration between health facilities, central medical stores, and private logistics providers, all through shared digital platforms. The goal? Safer, more reliable, and more coordinated medicine distribution nationwide.

This marks a critical step toward breaking down supply chain silos and creating real-time visibility across health logistics networks.

As South Africa invests in digital solutions, it paves the way for other countries to follow suit in making essential health products accessible, traceable, and consistently available.

Data is not only a technical asset. It is a mindset that strengthens coordination, transparency, and health outcomes.

Peer Learning Certificate 1: Supply Chain Data for Decision Making brought together health supply chain professionals for four weeks to explore how better data use improves forecasting, procurement, last-mile visibility, and decision-making. With more than 300 contributions, participants shared real examples, analysed data quality gaps, and committed to practical improvements in their workplaces.

The program highlighted a clear message: stronger data habits, supportive leadership, and effective digital systems are essential for resilient health supply chains.

The graphic presents a quick recap and summary of the 4-week program. A new Peer Learning Certificate will be launched in 2026 with another expert. Myth or Fact?

Myth: All hospitals have the equipment they need for patient care.
Fact: In many low-resource settings, hospitals lack not only sufficient equipment but also the systems to maintain what they do have. An estimated 40% of healthcare equipment in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is out of service, compared to less than 1% in high-income countries.

The reasons?
Poor infrastructure, lack of spare parts, insufficient training for maintenance, and limited service contracts. Non-functional equipment means delayed diagnoses, suboptimal care, and avoidable strain on healthcare workers.

Strengthening medical infrastructure goes beyond donations—it requires investing in sustainable systems that ensure the right equipment is functional, maintained, and usable where it is needed most.

Did You Know?

Poor last-mile logistics can result in critical vaccine wastage, jeopardising public health efforts and wasting valuable resources. In Malawi, nearly 20,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses had to be incinerated because they arrived at clinics with too little time left before expiry.

This was not due to a lack of vaccines, but due to distribution delays at the “last mile". This is a recurring challenge in many low-resource settings where infrastructure, coordination, and real-time tracking systems are limited.

Strengthening last-mile delivery is not just about faster transportation; it is about ensuring life-saving supplies reach those who need them, on time.

Digital infrastructure is the backbone of modern supply chains - helping countries improve efficiency, reduce stockouts, and ensure essential goods reach the people who need them most.

As announced earlier in May this year, the International Finance Corporation (IFC) is investing $100 million in Raxio Group to develop data centers across multiple African countries, including Uganda, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Mozambique, Angola, Ivory Coast, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

This investment marks an important step toward a digitally connected Africa, one that can better manage health products, logistics, and essential services through data-driven solutions.

How does last-mile data shape stronger health supply chains?

In Week 2 of the Peer Learning Certificate Course: Supply Chain Data for Decision Making, moderated by Mr Emmanuel Yuniwo Nfor, contributors from across Africa shared how digital tools, offline systems, and improved supervision are strengthening visibility and reducing stock-outs at the last mile.

The discussion highlighted both progress and persistent gaps: connectivity challenges, limited integration, and data quality issues continue to affect timely decision-making.

Yet one message stood out - when tools, skills, and accountability align, last-mile data becomes a powerful driver of performance.

This course is moving into the third week, and we look forward to deeper insights on data analysis and decision-making challenges from professionals across Africa and beyond.

Myth or Fact?

Myth: Donated equipment always helps fill gaps in healthcare.

Fact: Donated equipment does not always translate into effective use. In sub-Saharan Africa, around 70% of medical equipment is donated, yet only 10–30% becomes operational. The majority remain unused due to lack of spare parts, insufficient training, or incompatibility with local systems. To truly strengthen health systems, donations must be accompanied by long-term support, infrastructure alignment, and local capacity building.

Our Story

Bee Skilled is the dream to see self-sustaining public health systems in low- and middle-income countries. After decades of pursuits by our founders in Sub-Saharan Africa and South-East Asia, we realized that self-sustainability is only achievable when local talent is competent, confident and equipped with relevant knowledge to solve their own problems. However, the road to achieving this is often long, challenging and unsurprisingly, really expensive.

Our effort is to break these barriers and bring relevant knowledge and skills at your fingertips in the most affordable manner. We aspire to see competent health workforce driving the Universal Health Coverage agenda in their respective countries.
